Optimizing the Daily Care Interactions Between Direct Care Staff and Assisted Living Residents with Dementia
The purpose of this study is to pilot test the Promoting Positive Care Interactions (PPCI) intervention to establish a feasible and culturally responsive approach to optimize care interactions between staff (nursing, activity, housekeeping, and dining service) and residents living with dementia in assisted living facilities and further improve select resident, staff, and organizational outcomes. A convergent parallel mixed-method design with surveys, focus groups, and standardized measures will be used. Findings will inform the future implementation of PPCI.

Center for Immersive Learning and Digital Innovation: A Patient Safety Learning Lab advancing patient safety through design, systems engineering, and health services research
The development of feasible, effective, and scalable interventions to improve the safety of patients at risk for or with central line-related bloodstream infections is a pressing and urgent need. The proposed Center for Immersive Learning and Digital Innovation (CILDI) will advance the science of patient safety through a sustainable infrastructure that will test innovative interprofessional interventions co-designed with individuals and families experiencing these conditions. CILDI will utilize a framework comprising a systems engineering initiative for the patient safety model and the AHRQ systems engineering project life cycle to measure patient safety and process efficiency in order to increase the relevance, uptake, and sustainability of the interventions.

McKnight Profiles CON and Colleagues’ Research
The work of Katy Abbott (Miami University of Ohio) and Kimberly Van Haitsma was recently highlighted in McKnight Long Term Care News. The innovative dementia care intervention, Individualized Positive Psychosocial Interaction (IPPI) Program, has demonstrated positive improvements in nursing home residents’ level of alertness and engagement. This current low-cost project also showed feasibility and positive reaction from nursing home staff.
