Fall Newsletter

Administrator’s Note

The rates of Parkinson's disease have doubled in the past twenty years and are expected to double again in the next twenty. This past August, Dr. Ray Dorsey and Dr. Michael Okun published their second book together - The Parkinson's Plan: A New Path to Prevention and Treatment - in which they outline a detailed strategy to change this trajectory, offering a plan to prevent, treat and slow the disease.

On Wednesday, December 3, and in collaboration with Stony Brook University's School of Health Professions, we look forward to hosting Dr. Ray Dorsey for a lecture, book signing and reception on the beautiful Stony Brook University-Southampton Campus.

We do hope that you will join us.

With gratitude,
Sarah

INTER-PROFESSIONAL TEAM UPDATES

Welcome Isabella Echeverria, LMSW!

The Center for Parkinson's Disease is thrilled to welcome Isabella Echeverria, LMSW to our inter-professional care team. Isabella is a social worker who brings valuable experience working with diverse patient populations. She specializes in providing support to individuals and loved ones, as they navigate the challenges of chronic diagnoses. Her addition to our team strengthens our commitment to holistic, person-centered care. We are so excited to have her on board—welcome, Isabella!

What is the role of Social Work on the care team?
Social workers play a key role on an inter-professional care team by helping patients and families navigate the emotional, social, and practical challenges that often accompany a Parkinson’s diagnosis. They provide guidance with care planning and decision-making, connect individuals with resources and support services, and offer education throughout every stage of the journey. Social workers also help patients and loved ones understand their feelings, explore options, and take the next steps with confidence. Their role ensures that care extends beyond medical treatment to address the quality of life and overall well-being.
"A Parkinson’s diagnosis can feel overwhelming, but you do not have to go through it alone—support is available for patients and loved ones every step of the way."
Isabella Echeverria, LMSW
