Center for Parkinson's Disease

Winter Newsletter

Administrator’s Note

The end of each year invites reflection as we pause to celebrate successes and renew our commitment to continued growth and change in the coming year. In 2025, and in response to feedback from our community, the Center for Parkinson’s Disease was thrilled to launch several new initiatives. In November of this past year, we hosted the first Care Partner Symposium on the beautiful Stony Brook University-Southampton campus, welcoming thirty care partners for a day of education, connection and wellness. We also initiated a physician-led Advance Care Planning workshop which provided small-group information about advance care planning topics and included one-on-one consultations with Stony Brook Southampton Hospital’s palliative care medical director, Dr. Sabrina Trammel. In addition, 110 community members joined us for a lecture and book signing event with the New York Times bestselling author and world-renowned neurologist Dr. Ray Dorsey. Dr. Dorsey spoke about the root causes of Parkinson’s disease and what we can - and must – do to decrease risk for future generations. Finally, Ragan and I loved wrapping up the year with many of you at our annual holiday party. The food was delicious and the energy and joy were contagious. None of this would be possible without the generosity and spirit of this community, and Ragan and I are truly grateful. We wish you all a joyful 2026, and we look forward for more opportunities to be together in person soon.

With gratitude,

Sarah

INTER-PROFESSIONAL TEAM UPDATES

Growing our PD Care team:
As a Clinical Fellow in Speech-Language Pathology and graduate student at Teachers College, Columbia University, Kate Kocins recently attended the Parkinson’s Foundation Team Training in Denver, Colorado to learn about interdisciplinary care and collaboration in the treatment of Parkinson’s disease.
Kate brings her passion for patient care and experience with the Parkinson’s population to the team. Some highlights from her Parkinson’s Foundation Team Training included meeting and collaborating with other clinicians from around the country to learn from their experiences, generating new ideas on how to best support our Center in Southampton.
"Ultimately, I came to understand that a collaborative, person-centered approach is essential for addressing the complex and evolving needs of individuals living with Parkinson’s disease. -Kate Kocins, MS CF-SLP
