NEWS AND INFORMATION FROM THE CENTER FOR REAL ESTATE     VOL XVII ISSUE 1

Graduation 2017 is rapidly approaching! Students will finish up the semester with a week of projects and final exams beginning Monday, May 8.  Seniors continue to secure positions with top companies such as General Growth Properties (GGP), Equity Office, Wintrust, NAI MLG Commercial, Marcus & Millichap and many more.  Nineteen students will graduate in May with degrees in real estate bringing our total graduates from the program to 272 since 2005.

One of the ways that professionals help students is through the College of Business Mentoring Program.  The program is co-sponsored by the MU Business Alumni Association and provides valuable networking experiences for students. We are pleased to announce that  David Weiss , General Capital , was selected as Mentor of the Year in the College of Business.  Mr. Weiss was nominated by Real Estate Club President, Alexis Pagel.  If you would like more information about becoming a mentor, visit MUCoBMentoring .

As the semester comes to an end, we will begin preparations for the upcoming academic year. The Center for Real Estate remains open for the summer even though the students are away on a much needed break!!

Two Long-Time Instructors Retire
Dave Krill           John Lohre
By Mark Eppli

The Real Estate Program has been blessed with a deep, loyal, and talented pool of teaching talent - two of whom are retiring at the end of this semester.  John Lohre and
Dave Krill will be presenting their last PowerPoint slides and writing on the whiteboards with those squeaky dry erase markers for the last time in the coming weeks.

John Lohre has 42 years of teaching at Marquette for a total of 54 semesters - I do not know of another faculty member, full time or adjunct with such a long service tenure.   In that time John taught 2,158 students and still ma intains the attendance and grade evaluation sheets for each student. Just when you thought that all of that was behind you, John still knows!  For many years prior to my arrival at MU, John taught Introduction to Real Estate and Real Estate Finance providing real estate electives to business students.  More recently Real Estate Valuation has been his primary teaching responsibility, but he also has taught Financial Management and Banking courses for the Finance Department as well.  John, congratulations on the impact that you have made on generations of students and business professionals in our field, the industry is a better place and has better decision makers because of you.

I first met Dave Krill when I came to MU to interview as the inaugural Bell Chair in Real Estate in March 2002, Dave Krill joined then Dean Dave Shrock in taking Eliza and me out to dinner at Lake Park Bistro.  Then, as is the case now, Dave remains as a strong and committed voice for the commercial real estate industry and Jesuit education.  Dave still schools me importance and subtleties of Jesuit education and its relevance to all things in our lives.  Dave did the same in each of his Real Estate Cases classes over the past 15 years.  He taught Commercial Real Estate Cases using live bank credit presentations, inviting talented presenters, and teaching rigorous content, always with an eye toward the Jesuit approach to education.  The Commercial Real Estate Cases course is the program's capstone course which we use to provide a comprehensive look at all aspects of commercial real estate and transition our students to a career in the field - and Dave did that with grace and passion.  Thank you, Dave, for your commitment to the students and Center and for your friendship over the years.

John and Dave, thank you, your presence on campus will be missed.
2017 Case Competitions
The Spring semester of each academic year brings the Case Competition class taught by adjunct instructor Daniel Cowell. The class is a capstone course that takes students through the entire development process through the participation in two semester-long case competitions, one with the Harold E. Eisenberg Foundation in Chicago, IL and the other with NAIOP Minnesota in Minneapolis, MN.

We are pleased to announce that the NAIOP Minnesota team consisting of MJ Buckley, Carey DiPasquale, Corey Quinn and Mohsin Mirza placed second after being edged out by one point to UW Madison.
The Chicago Team faced a tough challenge with teams consisting of mainly graduate students but did extremely well.

Thank you to all of the professionals who assisted students during the semester.  Special thanks to Continental Properties and NAIOP Chicago for hosting practice presentations for the students!
Professor Cashman wins awards at ARES
We are pleased to announce that Dr. George Cashman, Associate Professor of Finance, was honored with two awards for his research at the American Real Estate Society (ARES) Annual Meeting in April.  "It is always an honor to be recognized for research work, particularly by ARES, the leading real estate research and education organization in the world.", said Cashman.  The awards were The Journal of Real Estate Literature Red Pen Award and a Best Paper for his work, Cross-Border Investment and Firm Liquidity.

Dr. Cashman came to Marquette in 2015 from Texas Tech University.  He will be teaching our new Modeling Class during the upcoming academic year.

The spring semester proved to be a very busy but rewarding time for the Real Estate Club.  Members have been attending various events such as the DePaul Collegiate Conference, CARW and NAIOP WI events and much more.  Earlier in the semester we were able to host a Young Guns Panel in which many recent graduates offered valuable insight regarding life after college and working in the real estate industry.  A special thanks to
Mike WanezekAndy Sinclair Liz Kilroy Charlie Houser ,
Patrick Reardon and  Danielle Kapitz .  Most recently, the club toured 84 South, a 40-acre mixed-use site in Greenfield, WI with NAIOP WI.

The Real Estate Club currently has about 60 active members but continues to grow exponentially each semester.  For the fall semester, we are hoping to tour Northwestern Mutual, the new MU student dorm and the Bucks training facility.  For now, we are busy wrapping up our semester studies and preparing for a summer full of real estate experience, whether it be through internships or our first destination jobs.

Finally, if you haven't seen it yet, check our our new website MUREClub.  Thank you to my sister and fellow real estate major  Lauren Pagel and  Sam Koziol for our new site!!
