2018 JCC Gala Celebrates Members

On February 24 beginning at 8 p.m the 2018 JCC Gala will thank and honor all its members, especially the 40+ families who have believed in the JCC and its mission for more than a half century. This year, 20-percent of JCC preschoolers are children of JCC preschool alumni. The youngest JCC members start out as infants in the JCC Early Childhood Education program. The oldest and wisest can tell over sixty years of JCC stories. Many septuagenarians at the JCC grew up in Columbus and spent their formative days at “the Center”, attending preschool, Hebrew school, Boy Scouts, BBYO and other youth activities, athletics, and camp. Their children come to the JCC, and their children after that. Many members have built their families in Columbus and their lives at the JCC.

It’s not unusual to see multiple generations at the JCC play many roles. JCC Children’s Programming Coordinator Kaley Rosenthal grew up at the JCC where her parents and grandparents were active members. Fred Luper's family has belonged to the JCC for over 75 years. He attended his preschool at the JCC, so did his children - and his children's children. Read their JCC stories and more as we gear up to celebrate YOU - our members!

Cole Essay Contest
As high school seniors are finishing high school and preparing for college, the David and Irene Cole Essay Contest provides a unique opportunity for students to consider a facet of their future university life. Asked to envision life as a college freshman, the essay of no more than 1,200 words, must describe how they will “perpetuate their own Jewish knowledge and practice as a college freshman, and why.”

Winners will receive up to $1,000 for submitting essays to the David and Irene Cole Essay Contest of the Jewish Community Center of Greater Columbus. Funds for the Cole Essay Contest are held at the Columbus Jewish Foundation. The contest is open to any Columbus area Jewish high school senior graduating this June and completed submissions are due by 9:00 AM on Friday, April 20, 2018. The Coles will announce the winning essay and finalists at the Jewish Teen Awards Night on May 17, 2018.
The essay contest, sponsored by Stuart and Marilyn Cole, is aimed at challenging students to consider their future college Jewish experiences. “It is named in memory of my husband’s parents,” said Marilyn Cole, a retired clinical social worker from Jewish Family Services. According to Stuart Cole, an attorney retired from the Ohio Attorney General’s office, “My Father had strong beliefs about the importance of Jewish education that were
shared by my Mother. Today, Jewish education and identity are an integral part of our lives and the lives of our three children, Sara (Ilan) Pearlman, Ely (Talia) Cole, and Rena (Adam) Gardin and our seven grandchildren. We take great pride in knowing that our children share our beliefs about the importance of passing on a strong Jewish identity to the next generation.”

Prior to their move to Cleveland last year, the Coles were active participants in the Columbus Jewish community. Their charitable pursuits included the Marilyn and Stuart Cole Philanthropic Fund of the Columbus Jewish Foundation, as well as funding the Columbus Torah Academy Physical Education Cup, Reading Recovery Program and the Hebrew Language Listening Lab. Marilyn and Stuart Cole, and the late Leonore and Larry Zusman, were the 2011 honorees of the Columbus Torah Academy Scholarship Dinner. Last June, the Coles were honored by Central Ohio Israel Bonds with the Community Leadership Award for their dedication to the Jewish community, State of Israel and Israel Bonds. At the JCC, the Coles had been in the forefront of funding the Yachad Program
and the JET Culture Clubs. The Coles were active members of Beth Jacob Congregation and Congregation Torat Emet Main Street Synagogue.

The 2018 Cole Essay Contest will accept completed applications and essays on “How I will perpetuate my Jewish knowledge and practice as a college freshman, and why” through 9:00 a.m., Friday, April 20, 2018. Early submissions are encouraged. Application forms and essay requirements are available on-line at www.columbusjcc.org/cole.
OSU Medical Study Partners with JCC for Knee Osteoarthritis Research

The Ohio State University is conducting a study of twenty participants to compare the effects of exercise and diet on pain management against the current recommendations by the Arthritis Foundation for patients over the age of 50. Ten participants will meet three days a week for supervised exercise sessions for twelve weeks. The other half of the participants will come to the JCC once a week for two hours of discussion, exercise, and nutritional recommendations for six months. The JCC will facilitate the study with JCC personal trainer Heather Sheets working with all 20 patients. All 20 members will have an 18-month membership to the JCC in hopes they continue exercise and lifestyle change after the study is complete.

"We are proud to be recognized as a facility that can accommodate all exercise needs," said JCC Fitness Director Jason Goggins, "We can provide personal training, group classes, and personalized workouts for anyone. Partnering with OSU to study how we can help arthritis patients promotes our mission to better lives through physical fitness and spiritual wellness."
