Central-Denison Newsletter
Happy Spring!

It’s hard to believe that it is April already. The last quarter of the school year is a busy time and leaves us a mere 45 days to prepare our students for the next school year.  We can’t help but smile when we see the growth that our students are making this year.

Many thanks to those of you who participated in our Spring Break Reading Challenge. We had participants from nearly every classroom! Some students logged their minutes of reading time, while others shared pictures of themselves enjoying their books in various ways and places while they were on vacation. Whether it was on a beach, snuggled up in their beds, or in some unique location, there were thousands of minutes of reading happening with our students and their families. The smiles on their faces reflected a genuine love of reading. Thanks for helping to inspire that love for books.

During the week of April 8 th through the 12 th, the Scholastic Book Fair will be visiting Central-Denison. This is a great opportunity to pick up some books for summer reading. Since it is before Easter, it may be a good opportunity to pick up a book to add as an Easter basket surprise.

We look forward to seeing you at the Central-Denison Book Tasting event on April 16 th. This event offers our families the opportunity to visit classrooms and get a “taste” of books on various topics. The reading restaurants open for customers at 5:30. Some of the tasting restaurants include The Pancake Palace, The Big Bear Bistro, and the Curious Café. There are many more to choose from, depending on your taste for books and treats.

Our students, 4K through 3 rd grade, are once again establishing themselves as authors and illustrators through the Cartonera Project. They have been working hard to strengthen their writing skills while creating their own illustrated books. The books will be on display in early May so that families can join in the celebration of learning. Invitations to the Cartonera Open House date will be sent shortly. You won’t believe the talented writers and illustrators that we have at Central-Denison. Please watch for your invitation.

The time goes by so quickly. It will be June 6 th before we know it. Thank you for sharing your children with us.

2019-2020 Class Lists

It is that time of year when the Central-Denison staff starts to think about the class lists for next year We are currently working to develop class lists that are supportive and beneficial to all students.  All of the Central-Denison teachers are highly qualified educators as recognized by the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction. Our teachers extend themse l ves to their students, determine their needs, and educate appropriately. We feel that every one of our teachers will develop each student  to  his  or her fullest potential. Therefore, we will not accept parent requests for a specific teacher.

Because we take this process seriously and we value your input as parents, we would li ke to enlist your help. If there is information regarding your child's education that their teachers are unaware of. P l ease complete the attached Student Information Slip and return it to school by April 12th. Please keep in mind that this is not a "tea cher request" form. We feel the focus should be on the child. Please tell us about your child's needs and let us determine the best teacher as well as the best group placement for your child. With this team approach we hope to place children in a setting that offers success for all.

Thank you in advance for your understanding of this procedure, as well as your continued support o f Central-Denison and the education of all children.

Walk in someone else’s shoes. Can you make it “one month” with little to no income?
Our Poverty Simulation is not a game. It’s an exercise that will challenge you to make it through various scenarios and situations that real people and families in poverty face every day. Will you go hungry in order to keep the lights and heat on? What will you do when the landlord issues you an eviction notice? Will you sell your possessions to make ends meet? Work through these scenarios and many others. Join us and develop a better sense of empathy, and respect for those in our community who face financial challenges.

Every 15 minutes lasts “one week” in the poverty simulation. Afterward, we’ll have time for follow up discussion among the group of 80 participants.
