What a crazy winter season! First, an unheard of snow day in November and now multiple snow days at the end of January. Brrrr! The mounds of snow on the playground are huge and the kids love to play on them. Please be sure that your child has snow pants, boots, a winter coat that zips, a winter hat, and gloves or mittens (preferably waterproof). We know that we remind you of this often, but these items provide much needed protection from the cold and wet weather. Recesses, the bus stop, and walks to school can be very chilly if dressed inappropriately. Please know that we take great care when it comes to making decisions relating to indoor/outdoor recesses. We routinely check the “feels like” temperature, consider precipitation, and check on the wind and sunshine. We may even allow them to go out for our shorter recesses and stay in for the longer recess at lunch time. Safety is the most important factor in the decision-making process.
We also know how important it is for our students to move around so when they are inside for recess, our staff tries to offer a mix of things for them to do. Some of the options include: free choice play, yoga, videos, and some large group dance and movement activities. Our classroom teachers do not use a “sit and get” model for teaching. They routinely use movement within the classroom, and on these extra cold or rainy indoor recess days, they often add activities that increase the opportunity for movement.
Time continues to fly as we head into second semester. We hope that you have a wonderful February filled with love and kindness. It won’t be long before the snow disappears, the grass greens, and the temperatures warm!
