Central-Denison Newsletter

Note from the Principal

Hello Cen-Den Families:

Welcome to February…the month of love! This is a great time to celebrate our love and

appreciation for our amazing students, supportive families, collaborative colleagues, and the rewarding work we do here at Central-Denison. We are so grateful to be a part of the CenDen Family.

Speaking of our amazing students, we have started to register 4K students for the 2024-2025 school year. Our 4-Year-Old Kindergarten program offers a full day or half day option that is designed to nurture the social, emotional, and early literacy skills of children who will have turned four years old before September 1, 2024. Our students enjoy opportunities to grow academically in a play-based environment. These programs are offered at both Central-Denison and Star Center elementary schools. Please encourage your neighbors and friends to register their four year olds for school. They can contact the school district for help with the registration process or check out the district website for more information. www.lakegenevaschools.com.

As we start the second half of the school year, we are proud to celebrate the academic growth of our students. January was a month filled with assessments. We looked at reading, writing, and math for all students. Additionally, our English Language Learners demonstrated their proficiency in the areas of speaking, listening, reading, and writing. With all of our testing behind us, we are settling in for that time of year when we see the most growth. There are fewer interruptions to the schedule, classroom supports and interventions are in place, and our students understand the expectations for behavior in

the school environment.

Undoubtedly, the second semester will pass as quickly as the first and before we know it, we will be planning the transitions for next school year. Please watch for upcoming information about our new summer programming. We think you will be pleasantly surprised.

Thank you for sharing your children with us.

Important Information about Pick Ups

Dear CenDen Families:

Anticipating more snowfall, I wanted to share a few VERY IMPORTANT reminders with you about our pick-up and drop-off procedures. The normal procedures are included in the handout below for your review, but I would like to share some additional helpful hints that make a big difference, especially with the addition of snow.

  • Please approach the lines with caution. With the addition of snow piles and slippery roadways, the street narrows down a bit making it more difficult to see clearly and maneuver around safely.
  • Have your children get in and out of the car on the passenger side of the vehicle. This keeps them safely on the sidewalk with no risk of getting pinched between two vehicles or getting hit by a car out in the roadway.
  • PATIENCE…Honking, yelling, or swearing at people does not make the line move faster and only adds to the frustration for everyone.
  • If you don’t like to wait in line, consider coming a bit later. Five minutes makes quite a bit of difference. School starts at 8:45 and dismissal is at 3:45. If you come too early, you will need to wait in line longer.
  • If you are picking up or dropping off at Cook Street, enter the line from NORTH STREET Do not try to cut into the line at Dodge Street. Others have been waiting in line and do not appreciate your cutting into the line ahead of them.
  • Also, if dropping off on Cook Street, please DO NOT turn into the back alley driveway and drop your child off. It blocks the sidewalk and causes unsafe conditions for those families who are walking their children to the door and need to cross the driveway areas. It might seem more convenient for you, but it is not safe for others.
  • DO NOT park in the alley while waiting for your child. The alley behind Central-Denison is a public thoroughfare.
  • If you are picking up or dropping off on Madison Street, please approach the line from the south (closest to the lake). Madison Street is quite narrow and it is not safe to drop your child off on the west side of the road and ask them to cross.
  • Use the crosswalks! – Set an example for our students and be safe, even if it is a few steps out of the way.

We work very hard to make our pick-up and drop-off areas safe for everyone, whether you are a child getting into or out of a car, or a parent trying to pick up or drop off your child. It is not our intention to cause anyone undue stress, that is why we have the plans in place that we do. We know that it is not ideal, but it works…when we work together. If the pick-up and drop-off lines don’t work for your family’s needs, please remember, the bus is always an option or you can contact the office for alternative ideas.

Thank you for your help in keeping our school safe.

Communication Protocol

Whom do I contact with a question or suggestion? Lake Geneva Schools’ communication protocols help promote direct, open, and respectful interactions so that we quickly and efficiently resolve problems and concerns. The communication protocol starts with the staff member closest to the situation, as that person usually has the most information. However, at times, additional personnel are required to resolve specific concerns.

Student Attendance and Attendance Procedures
One of the biggest ways you can help your child succeed this school year is to make sure your child gets to school, on time, each and every day. The evidence is clear: children with good attendance are more likely to be successful in school. High attendance rates are linked to high student achievement. Every day counts, and missing school even 10% of the time has a significant negative impact on reading and math achievement as children progress through school. We want to ask for your commitment to making sure your child attends school every day possible this year.

When your child does have to be absent from school, we ask that you communicate with us about the absence. When your child will be absent, you have two communication options:

Call Mrs. Draper in the main office at 262-348-4000 to speak with her and/or leave a message by 9:30 AM each day.

You may login to Powerschool to record the reason for your child’s absence. Please see the directions linked here.

We also ask that you let us know about pre-planned absences, including vacations and doctor appointments, ahead of time. When missing school for an appointment, it is always encouraged that you get documentation of your visit to provide to the school as verification. When leaving for an extended vacation, we also ask that you complete the Planned Absence Request form. This form can be obtained from Mrs. Draper in the office.

Lastly, please also note, as a school, we are required to track student attendance and support families with any attendance issues or concerns. Our highest priority is to have students at school, and we are willing to help in any way we can. As a parent, it is important to understand the current State of Wisconsin attendance laws stated below:

A parent or guardian may only excuse their child/children 10 days during the school year including doctor visits. After these 10 days, an absence can only be excused if the school is provided with a note from a doctor, dentist, court, etc. The same guidelines apply for excessive tardies.

Once a student has been absent for 10 days (excused or unexcused), parents/guardians will receive a letter, noting the absences as well as procedures for next steps to improve attendance

Thank you in advance for your commitment and support to your child’s attendance this school year.

When to Keep Your Child Home from School
School attendance is very important, and we encourage families to make sure their children are in school as much as possible. However, children who are sick need to stay home for their well-being and to prevent others from becoming sick.
