CMCBD Community Guides Recognized
The
CMCBD Safety Summit
at ACT Strand Theater gathered a variety of experts to address public safety in Central Market. More on that in our Events section below. Leading up to the event, Epicenter-sf covered the work of various walking ambassadors in the Central Market area. Most notably, Nick Hitchko (third from the left), our longest tenured Community Guide was prominently featured. Nick continues to be an outstanding resource for so many people in the District. We are grateful for his efforts to ensure our District is a welcoming, safe place for all.

The main goal of the 7th and 8th Streets Safety Project is to improve safety and comfort for all modes of travel along 7th and 8th between Market Street and Folsom Street. Hoodline has more on the project, which could include changes to several public transit routes.
Supervisor Jane Kim Talks With Streetsblog
Just as Quarter 3 began,
SF Streetsblog spoke with Supervisor Jane Kim
in a phone interview about traffic safety concerns within the District and throughout the city. Supervisor Kim
sits on th
e
SF County Transportation Authority's Vision Zero Sub-Committee. Supervisor Kim discussed implementation of safety improvements as well as other methods to encourage bike and pedestrian safety including behaviors beyond
enforcement.
SF Ranked 2nd Most Bike-Friendly U.S. City
According to a biennial ranking from
Bicycling magazine, SF ranked as the second most bike-friendly city in the United States. The ranking specifically noted improvements and data collection on behalf of Vision Zero efforts for the jump in ranking. It also noted new bike corridors and an increase in bike sharing programs.
Safer Market Street 5th Street Turn Restrictions
In Quarter 3, the final part of SFMTA's Safer Market Street Plan was set in motion turn restrictions ready for implementation at 5th and Market Streets. As Hoodline reports, "the agency began implementing the turn restrictions last August, but avoided Fifth and Market due to the closure of Ellis Street for Central Subway construction."

Street Cinema, those walking along Market Street or Stevenson Alley have likely noticed work is
under way with the absence of the former marquis.
SF Business Times
reports the loan is for $34M on behalf of Encore Capital Management. Total cost of the project is estimated at $56M. Hector Calderon, managing director of Encore Capital Management, says the cond
os will target singles, young couples and empty nesters looking for a walkable, urban lifestyle.
6th Annual 2 Blocks of Art
On September 16th, 2 Blocks of Art returned to 6th Street for the sixth straight year. Organized by CMCBD the event featured more than 100 artists showcasing work in storefronts, sidewalks, galleries, restaurants, hotels and small businesses throughout two blocks of Sixth Street, from Market to Howard. In addition to participation from longstanding galleries such as 1AM, Luggage Store and SF Camerawork this year's art walk featured new work by photographer, Janet Delaney, and a Sketch-the-Block sketch con by Sketchpad Gallery. Each year this event brings thousands of people to the Sixth Street corridor in support of the many vibrant businesses and local artists in the area. A humungous thank you to all participant artists, businesses, volunteers, sponsors and visitors who came together for this fun, free, family-friendly event.
Trinity Place Among 50 Biggest SF Projects
SF Business Times shares a gallery slideshow of San Francisco's 50 largest construction projects. Among them, Trinity Place at 8th and Market Streets. Designed by Architectonica, phase three of the project boasts a 19-story residential tower with 541 units. Construction cost is estimated at $228M.
6X6 Retail Shopping Center
In Quarter 3, SF Chronicle reported on changes afoot at the nearly completed retail center 6X6, on the 900 block of Market Street. Formerly referred to as Market Street Place, the new name is in reference to the building's six floors and proximity to 6th Street. According to the article, 6X6 representatives are currently "in talks with several fashion-forward brands not currently in San Francisco." They are also in talks with grocers and home goods retailers. Also in the article, expect a fifth floor featuring restaurants and cocktail lounges as well as a food hall concept.
944 Market Street
In Quarter 3, Synapse Development Group, which is currently developing th
e Yotel San Francisco at 1095 Market Street, partnered with AQARAT to purchase 944 Market Street. 944 Market includes over 43,000 square feet of office space and ground-floor retail, plus
a basement level. The property is currently 100% leased to tenants including Hack Reactor, HelloSig
n
,
Rescale and Brandon College.
The partnership plans to reposition the property and complete façade restoration work, an elevator modernization and improvements to common
areas and building systems according to a
statement from commercial real estate group CoStar
.
1036 Mission
Progress is being made at 1036 Mission Street. Acquired by the nonprofit affordable housing developer, Tenderloin Neighborhood Development Corporation (
TNDC) in 2007, the project will consist of 83 affordable residential units and a ground floor community-serving retail space. More than half of the units will be two and three-bedroom. Forty units will be made available for homeless or at-risk families through the City's subsidy program. Learn more about the project

CMCBD Safety Summit
On September 12th, Central Market CBD gathered over 200 at ACT's Strand Theater for an insightful series of presentations to address safety in the District. The Strand lobby was filled with representatives and information tables from public safety organizations such as: ALERT, Applied Video Solutions, BART Police, Central Market CBD, MUNI Police, NERT, SF Safe, Safe Passage.
Presenters included Tenderloin and Southern Police Station Captains Teresa Ewins and Daryl Fong who discussed public safety best practices, awareness and important crime prevention tactics.
Dimitri
Shimolin of Applied Video Solutions discussed the importance of high quality security cameras to prevent and prosecute crime. Participants were also encouraged to join CMCBD's exterior security camera program. Justine Cephus of the District Attorney's office presented aspects of successful prosecution and stressed the importance of reporting crime, being a witness and participating in jury duty. ArtNight SF Returns To UN Plaza
Art Night SF returned to UN Plaza in Quarter 3 for another series of arts-inspired activation. Art Night SF is a collaboration between local galleries, museums, arts nonprofits, city agencies and independent artists with the collective aim of publicly championing the arts in San Francisco. This year's series includes a
healthy morning edition. Stay tuned to Art Night SF to join the fun. The final two installments of this year's Art Night SF series occur on October 14th and 28th.
The Bay Lights Team Spotlight 'LightRail'
As Quarter 3 came
to a
close, Illuminate, the nonprofit arts group associated
with
The
Village
event space, who just last year celebrated
the
permanence of their light installation, The Bay
Lights
, which dazzle onlookers of the
Bay
Bridge, reintroduced their LightRail
project
with a media presentation at The Hall, 1028 Market
Street
. As SF Chronicle reports, the proposed $10M project is seeking private funds to bring their City-approved plan to
fruition
. LightRail would bring two strands of LED lights along Market
Street
, from Embarcadero to Van Ness, which would pulse in synchronized patterns with underground trains. You can learn more about the project, watch a video or consider contributing on the LightRail website here.
SF AMA TRICE in Mint Plaza
On Sunday September 25th, a collection of restaurant and food-world partners, including Marcia Gagliardi, aka Tablehopper, 54 MINT and Montesacro, among others, collaborated to host an all-day fundraiser featuring food and wine pairings throughout four seatings in Mint Plaza.
