SFPD Increases Units To Tackle Drug Dealing
SFPD is supplementing ongoing efforts to
get drugs and drug dealers off the streets in the Mid-Market, Tenderloin, and SoMa neighborhoods through new tactics and additional police officers. A recent article on
San Francisco News states: "According to
the Mayor's website, San Francisco Police Chief Bill Scott is in the process of adding 10 new officers, including a second lieutenant and two sergeants will be assigned to the San Francisco Police Department Tenderloin Station." These additional police officers will help increase the SFPD's foot beat officer patrols of the neighborhoods by 50 percent.
The SF Chronicle followed with an article stating how the SFPD are often dealing with a "revolving door at the Hall of Justice". Dealers are back out on the street just days after their arrests. However, SFPD is making sure it's much harder for drugs to be openly sold on the streets: "...if they can't get rid of them, the police can make the dealers' lives as miserable as possible by seizing their product and cash. Police seized 1,072 bindles of heroin, cocaine, meth and fentanyl in the Tenderloin and South of Market from October 2 to November 7."

6th Street Redesign Approved
In October the
San Francisco Chronicle analyzed the pros and cons to a "road diet" on 6th Street, a road where "a pedestrian is hit every 16 days." The article came on the eve of a vote by the SFMTA approving the plan to remove one southbound lane of traffic on Sixth Street between Market and Howard. Plans also call for 1) new and wider sidewalks, 2) curb extensions at crosswalks to shorten the crossing distance for pedestrians, and 3) more sidewalk lighting. As with the Better Market Street project, CMCBD staff will work closely with SFMTA, Public Works and District businesses and property owners who will be deeply impacted by the project's construction. Custom construction mitigation plans must be developed for each and every storefront to ensure safety and ease of access for pedestrians.
