Message from Your ACHE Regent

Winter 2015

M. Lee Holmes, FACHE, CMPE

I would like to thank the staff of the Texas Hospital Association for making their Annual Convention an outstanding success. The Horace Cardwell ACHE Breakfast maintained its history of excellence and the approximately 100 Members and Fellows in attendance enjoyed an inspiring message from the ACHE's Chairman, Christine M. Candio, RN, FACHE. Following breakfast we moved into the Face-to-Face Leadership Session attended by hundreds present. Ms. Candio mediated a well-regarded panel discussion covering how successful leaders manage change. We were treated to exceptional words of wisdom and examples from C. David Huffstutler, President and CEO of HCA's St. David's Healthcare, Charles D. Stokes, FACHE, Memorial-Hermann System COO & ACHE Governor and Michael Williams, MD, FACHE, President of North Texas State Health Science Center. Next year's THA Conference will be in Dallas, Texas on January 21-22, so please make plans to join us.

Our South Texas Chapter just completed another outstanding year in their Healthcare Landscapes series. click here to read more

President's Letter

G. Brian Henry, MHA

Dear Members,

What a great start to the year this has been for the Central Texas healthcare community. As it is every year, the Texas Hospital Association Annual Conference is the highlight for our hospital affiliates from around the state and a premier event to kick off the conference season.

This year was no exception with a great turnout for the for the Horace Cardwell ACHE Affiliates Breakfast on Friday, January 23rd, where Christine Candio, RN, FACHE, CEO Inova Alexandria Hospital, and Chairman of the American College of Healthcare Executives, gave a well-received ACHE update titled: Leading Through an Evolving Healthcare Landscape.

We were also honored to host not one, but two recipients of the prestigious 2014 Baldridge National Quality Awards at the breakfast. St. David's Healthcare in Austin, TX and former Central Texas ACHE Board Member and current CEO of Hill Country Memorial Hospital in Fredericksburg, TX, Jayne Pope, MBA, RN, FACHE. Congratulations to both organizations click here to read more.

PC Social Networking Event

Thank you to everyone who attended our LPC social networking event on Jan 16th at the Hippodrome Theatre in Waco.  We had 35 ACHE members and Baylor graduate students attend for an evening of networking in a renovated 100-yr old working theatre in downtown Waco.

Save the date - we are working on an educational event for May 7th

If you are an ACHE member working in the Killeen, Temple, or Waco markets and you would like to get more involved in the Local Program Council, please contact Beth Booher at [email protected] or 254-680-1112.  We will soon have a turnover in leadership so opportunities to volunteer are available.  We are looking for committee chairs to help with membership, programs, and sponsorships.

ACHE Celebrates Philanthropy

at the Ronald McDonald Room

Dell Children's Hospital

On Feb. 28th, the American College of Healthcare Executives Central Texas celebrated its first Philanthropy Event at the Ronald McDonald Room at Dell Children's Hospital in Austin, Texas.  In the middle of an ice storm with closures throughout the metropolitan area, the volunteers braved the icy road conditions to help serve families with their children.   Families were there for extended stay as their children were hospitalized for various conditions, some exceeding 3 to 4 months length of stay.

It was a nice gathering and families showed great appreciation for the warm food and company.  We hope to continue philanthropy efforts to support the many healthcare needs of patients and their families in the Central Texas community.

Download our NEW ACHE Central Texas Mobile App!  Just search "ACHE Central Texas Chapter" in your app store.

After receiving an innovation grant from ACHE National, your Central Texas Chapter went to work to develop a mobile app for our members.  Partnering with Ringful Health, we were able to develop an app that provides easy access to ACHE news, upcoming events & registration, and FACHE steps to advance.

Your Chapter leaders will be presenting the new app to National at the Annual Leadership Conference in Chicago on September 29, 2014.   We are hopeful this is just the beginning of mobile technology for ACHE, and we are proud to pioneer the way.

We are the only Chapter in the organization to have this technology.  Take advantage of our FREE app and download it today!

  What Healthcare Can Learn
from
Super Bowl XLIX

In today's dynamic healthcare industry, ongoing efforts to not only conform but also survive as an organization require significant investigations into the intricate details of an environmental playbook that seem to never end. With initiatives such as P4P, CQI, ICD-10, ACOs, etc, healthcare administrators and associated stakeholders must study every variable in-play, to include that which may be the unimaginable. Often, similarities among industries are observed and these manifestations can provide further insight and potential opportunities for specific industries in times of crisis. Prime case-in-point: Super Bowl XLIX.

1. Deflate-Gate

No one would have ever imagined New England's head coach Bill Belichick becoming an expert in atmospheric pressure and conducting a research study investigating pounds-per-square-inch and the relationship with environmental temperature changes. Such distractions
