Message from Your ACHE Regent
Spring 2015
Michael Nowicki, EdD, FACHE, FHFMA
I wanted to use my first Regent message to introduce myself as your new Interim Regent and thank M. Lee Holmes, FACHE for serving as our Regent through March when he relocated to Houston. Lee did a great job with organization and communication and I hope I can do as well. I am a professor of health administration at Texas State University where I teach and research healthcare financial management and economics. Prior to joining academe fulltime in 1986, I was Director of Process Management in the Hospital Division of Humana for six years. Prior to Humana, I held a variety of administrative positions at Valley Medical Center in Fresno, Hutzel Hospital in Detroit, Georgetown University Medical Center, and Lubbock Medical Center. I joined ACHE as a student associate in 1975 during my graduate work. I passed the certification exam in 1980 and became a Fellow in 1988. During the 1990s, I helped write questions for the certification exam and for the last several years I have taught financial management for ACHE in clusters, in certification exam reviews, and Congress presentations. Locally I served as the second president of the Central Texas Chapter and have been active in the South Texas Chapter. I have also provided recent training support to such organizations as the Indiana Army National Guard, the medical command at Vandenberg AFB, Ascension Health, Cardinal Health, Spectrum Health, Kaiser Permanente, University Hospitals in Cleveland, HCA, Mercy Hospitals of Northern Ohio, Baylor Healthcare System, and Howard University Hospital. I also wanted to remind members of upcoming events: the Central Texas Chapter is providing Face-to-Face credit for Leading Information Safety: Planning for Data Privacy and Security on April 28 and will have a Social & Networking Event on May 7. Please let me know if I can do anything for you. I can be reached at nowicki@txstate.edu. Michael Nowicki, EdD, FACHE Regent for Texas - Central & South

President's Letter
G. Brian Henry, MHA
Dear Members,
Summer is here and we have reached the end of the 2014-15 CTACHE Board term. It has been an honor and a privilege to serve as your president for the last year and a half and I am confident Amanda Frye, your incoming president, will continue to raise the bar for the chapter. I would like to thank the board members for the unwavering commitment to the cause, making this last term one of the best yet by bringing consistent, high quality education events and hosting some of the best social/networking events in Austin. I would also like to thank our volunteers and sponsors, without their support, these events would not be possible. In reflection, I would like to highlight some of the great things the chapter was able to achieve in the past year and a half: Continue reading for more updates....

Interdependence of Public, Private and Federal Healthcare Delivery
On Thursday, May 7th the Local Program Council (LPC) had an incredibly successful panel discussion on the "Interdependence of Public, Private and Federal Healthcare Delivery." The Central Texas Veterans Health Care System in Temple hosted the event at their Business Office building and we had 50 attendees total. Of those 50, we had 13 non-ACHE members attend so hopefully they are all considering a new membership.
Our moderator for the evening was Carlyle Walton, President and CEO of the Metroplex Adventist Hospital in Killeen. We were fortunate to have three of our senior local leaders as our Panelists. COL Patricia Darnauer, the Commander of Carl R. Darnall Army Medical Center, represented our Department of Defense healthcare system at Fort Hood.

Managing for Morale: Effective Management Techniques to Retain Staff On Friday, June 12th, the American College of Healthcare Executives (ACHE) and the National Forum for Latino Healthcare Executives (NFLHE) hosted, "Managing for Morale: Effective Management Techniques to Retain Staff "at the University of Texas Club. The first presentation included speaker Martha Raymos Duffer, Psy.D, addressing emotional intelligence, communication and leadership for multigenerational and multicultural employees. The topic of emotional intelligence was further explored in a second presentation by Cynthia de Las Fuentas, PhD, who then moderated a panel session with David Shimp, COO, St. David's Medical Center, Maria Serafine, Consultant, Avanza Healthcare Strategies and Tammy Spohn, VP, Patient Services, Baylor, Scott & White Health. According to previous leadership theories, we have evolved from the concept that great men and women are born, not bred to the belief that those exhibiting specific traits or actions define great leaders. Download our NEW ACHE Central Texas Mobile App! Just search "ACHE Central Texas Chapter" in your app store.
After receiving an innovation grant from ACHE National, your Central Texas Chapter went to work to develop a mobile app for our members. Partnering with Ringful Health, we were able to develop an app that provides easy access to ACHE news, upcoming events & registration, and FACHE steps to advance.
Your Chapter leaders will be presenting the new app to National at the Annual Leadership Conference in Chicago on September 29, 2014. We are hopeful this is just the beginning of mobile technology for ACHE, and we are proud to pioneer the way.
We are the only Chapter in the organization to have this technology. Take advantage of our FREE app and download it today!

Leading Information Safety:
Planning for Data Privacy and Security
On Tuesday, April 28th, the Central Texas ACHE chapter hosted an event, "Leading Information Safety: Planning for Data Privacy and Security". While enjoying a breakfast bounty prepared by St. David's Medical Center staff, Aaron Franklin, Mimir Health addressed current problems, ethical concerns and potential solutions regarding healthcare data security, followed by a panel discussion with Thomas Thrower, Austin Diagnostic Clinic CIO, John Southrey, Manager, Consulting Services, Texas Medical Liability Trust and moderated by Charles Durant, FACHE.
According to the Identity Theft Resource Center, forty-three percent of reported breaches in 2014 occurred in the healthcare space. Since information found within an individual's health record can net
