Item Writer Workshop
Learn more about item writing by attending the workshop "Secrets of Competency Testing: Writing Items for Hospice and Palliative Certification Exams."

The Hospice and Palliative Credentialing Center, with expert assistance from Applied Measurement Professionals of Olathe, Kansas, offers a unique opportunity for you to make a direct contribution to developing the certification examinations. Individuals who have a strong knowledge base in hospice and palliative care are welcome. Expertise in item writing or test development is not required.
The workshop is offered as a three part course; the first two parts must be done online, and the third and last part is a live webinar.  The third session is offered three times throughout the year.  The next live webinar for part three is scheduled for Thursday, October 15, from 11:00 am to 12:30 pm ET.
Upon completion of all three courses and the post-test and evaluation, you will receive 3.5 contact hours.  Nursing Assistants will receive a certificate of participation.

2015 Recertification Reminder
We wanted to remind those whose certification expires on December 31, 2015 what options that you have to recertify before the end of the year.
In 2015:
  • ACHPNs must recertify by the Hospice and Palliative Accrual for Recertification (HPAR) process
  • CHPNs, CHPPNs, CHPLNs, and CHPCAs have the option to recertify by testing or by the HPAR process
  • CHPNAs can recertify by testing only
For those testing, the last testing window is in December.  Applications for that window will be taken beginning September 1, but the last deadline to apply will be November 15, 2015. You must apply before that date to test.  For those using the HPAR process, the last day to submit your information without additional fees is October 31, 2015

Candidate handbooks for each certification are available through our web site. If you need an objective measure to see if you're ready, we suggest trying a self-assessment exam
In addition, there are two other things that may help.  The Hospice and Palliative Nurses Foundation offers scholarships that can reimburse your costs for either certification or recertification.  In addition, members of the Hospice and Palliative Nurses Association receive a discounted rate to take the exam.  However, make sure you join or renew your HPNA membership at least two business days before you apply for the exam, to receive the member rate.
If you have any additional questions regarding renewal or the status of your certification, please contact the HPCC national office at 412-787-1057 or by email at hpcc@gohpcc.org.
Learn More about HPAR
We have created a brief slideshow that we hope will help clarify the HPAR process in recertification.  It is available through the link below, and also on our website at www.goHPCC.com, under your specific credential and under the "recertification" tab at the bottom of the page.
One Remaining Test Window For 2015
December is the last opportunity to test in 2015, so apply early!
The application period for the December 2015 testing window begins on September 1.  Paper applications are due by October 15, and the online application deadline is November 15.  All applicants including APRNs may now apply online.
Please download and/or print the appropriate
candidate handbook for the exam you plan to take, available at www.goHPCC.org . Each handbook contains information about the corresponding exam, such as how to apply, fees, schedules, detailed test content outline of the information covered on the exam, suggested references for study, and much more!
Be sure to view the 2015 certification application fee schedule . HPNA members continue to receive substantial exam discounts as a membership benefit, with most savings greater than the cost to join.  Keep your HPNA membership current or consider joining to receive this as well as many other benefits. If interested in HPNA membership, visit www.goHPNA.org.

Employer Supporter Program
In 2001, the Hospice and Palliative Credentialing Center initiated an Employer Supporter Program, and has been committed to continuing this recognition on an annual basis for those who continue their efforts. Currently, there are 120 employers that have acknowledged that they support certification through HPCC.

The information shared with the national office staff reveals a wide range of support and recognition the organizations provide to registered nurses, licensed practical/vocational nurses, nursing assistants, advanced practice nurses, administrators, and professionals in perinatal loss care. Many agencies require certification of their staff within a specified time frame.

Agencies report many different ways they recognize certified staff, including:

  • Annual ceremony often in conjunction with National Certified Nurses Day or National Nurses Week
  • Engraved wall plaques with name and credentials
  • Awarded monogrammed gift presented by CEO
  • Letter from the board chairman to each person who passes exam
  • Certification pins for all who pass

There were also options for financial support, including:

  • Reimbursement of the certification fee for a successful candidate
  • Coverage of lodging and travel expenses associated with the exam.
  • Some pay differentials and/or bonuses to credentialed individuals
  • Many provide continuing education opportunities, including review courses

Certification is one way to help validate the competence and knowledge of the staff, and the Employer Supporter Program is a way to help focus greater attention on the importance of the nursing team in the delivery of hospice and palliative care services.

Organizations in the Employer Supporter Program have their name and location posted on our website. Other benefits of the program include a wall certificate for display indicating participation in this program, receiving the certification e-newsletter, and eligibility to receive the annual Employer of the Year Award.

For information on becoming a part of this program, please look under Certification and Employers at www.goHPCC.org
