Chabot College Recognized as 2025 Pathway Champion for English Placement and Student Success

(Hayward, Calif., Nov. 12, 2025) - Chabot College has been named a 2025 Pathway Champion for Placement by the Campaign for College Opportunity, earning top honors in two categories: Campuswide Transfer-Level English Success and Campuswide Growth in Transfer-Level English Success

Chabot was recognized among the top three California Community Colleges for supporting the highest percentage of students completing a transfer-level English course within one year of enrollment (academic year 2023–24). The college also placed among the top three California Community Colleges for the greatest year-over-year growth in transfer-level English completion rates (2022–23 to 2023–24).

The Campaign for College Opportunity’s annual Pathway Champion Awards celebrate 40 California Community Colleges and California State Universities for their leadership in implementing equitable placement policies and advancing the Associate Degree for Transfer (ADT) pathway. Students are being supported to succeed in courses that count toward their transfer goals and placed on an expedited, guaranteed path to a four-year degree.

“This recognition from the Campaign for College Opportunity affirms the hard work and collaboration taking place across our campus,” said Dr. Jamal Cooks, president of Chabot College. “Our faculty, staff, and administrators remain deeply committed to creating equitable learning environments that help students achieve their academic goals.”

Dr. Cooks noted that Chabot’s success reflects years of focused, campuswide collaboration to remove barriers and create equitable opportunities for student advancement. “Through a unified and intentional strategy, Chabot College has expanded student access to transfer-level English through early opportunities like dual enrollment courses, robust on-campus support through Guided Pathways success teams, and the dedication of our counseling departments,” he said.

President Cooks also highlighted the college’s Zero Textbook Cost Program, which has made transfer-level English more accessible and affordable. “The program has reduced the overall cost of education for students and decreased the time it takes to complete degree programs,” he added.

Nearly two-thirds of California’s college students begin their higher education journey at community colleges. Historically, transferring from community college to a four-year university has been filled with systemic barriers. Now, more students are transferring faster, with 10% of current community college students transferring within two years and 19% after four years.

Chabot College’s recognition as a 2025 Pathway Champion reaffirms its commitment to equitable access, student achievement, and innovative approaches to supporting transfer success across California.
