Chabot College café launches reusable container program in partnership with Encora

(Hayward, Calif., April 21, 2023) - Café Chabot, in partnership with Encora, is proud to announce the launch of its reusable container program for the spring 2023 semester. This initiative marks a significant step towards reducing the amount of single-use waste Chabot College (Chabot) generates.

“We at Encora are excited Chabot is taking this important step towards moving to zero waste dining operations,” said Ted Wallis, founder and chief executive officer of Encora. “The cooperation between college administration and Pacific Dining at Café Chabot is enabling student and staff participation into the Encora reusable platform, and we are encouraged by the results so far.”

By choosing to use reusable containers, customers can contribute to lowering greenhouse gas emissions, saving water and reducing oil consumption. This program offers a simple way to make an impact every day while eating on campus.

"Chabot College is taking the first steps to decrease the amount of single-use waste that the college generates by instituting a reusable container program,” said Chabot-Las Positas Community College District Climate Action Coordinator Katie Dickinson. “We're aiming to be a leader in sustainability and zero waste, and utilizing the reusable container program is an easy way for the campus community to do their part for the planet."

The Chabot college community can follow these four simple steps:

  • Download the free Encora app on a phone and create an account with a school email.
  • Order food from Café Chabot and ask for food in a reusable container. Use the Encora app to scan the QR code at the top of the container and enjoy the meal.
  • When finished eating, empty the remaining food from the container into the compost bin located next to the Encora return bin.
  • Return the container to the return bin in the cafeteria within 7 days. The container will be picked up, sanitized, and reused!

Café Chabot aims to serve all meals in reusable containers to meet the college's goal of reducing single-use waste. The Encora app must be downloaded before then to help the college achieve its sustainability goals.

The Chabot college community will receive $5 off their sixth meal ordered from Café Chabot for every five containers they use and return throughout the semester. The program is also available for catered events on campus.
