Dear Michiana Jewish Community,

I hope you had sweet and meaningful Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur and are enjoying a joyous Sukkot, one of my favorite holidays
I’d like to share a family Sukkot tradition that began in the creative hands of my great grandmother, Feiga. The tradition was to make “Sukka birdies” to hang from the evergreen roof of the Sukka. Sylvia Kruger, my Ima (mother), made these fun and sweet little decorations with us every year as we were growing up. This family tradition continues to delight as the family expands; last week my Ima added great grandchild #23 to the family “nest,” along with her 17 grandchildren and five children.
While preparing for the High Holidays, I asked my Ima, who lives in Zichron Yaakov, Israel, to demonstrate how to make a Sukka birdie so I could share this fun holiday activity with my extended Jewish Michiana family. I’d also like to give a special thanks to my sister, Martha, who produced this video.
Meet my Ima and enjoy the video.
You are invited to join in the fun and make your own Sukka birdies. If you do, please send photos to [email protected]. In turn, I will compile a digital photo album to share with you, my extended Jewish family, and my Ima.
Chag Sameach…
and happy Sukka birdie making!

Executive Director
