PRINCIPAL'S UPDATES

Dear CFMS Families,

Today we celebrated with our students everything that has been accomplished! Homerooms met to chat and to watch a Variety Show Special, which included student and staff talents, team and building videos, awards, slideshows and farewells. This video is posted for your viewing on our website. CLICK HERE . A list of award winners is also listed below.

Tomorrow through June 1st students have the opportunity to complete or enhance assignments and possibly meet with teachers if needed. We are trying to ensure everyone finishes strong. Access Day is also tomorrow. I am disappointed to share that the yearbooks have not arrived. Therefore they will not be included in the bags. As soon as they arrive I will determine a plan for distribution and communicate with you.

Looking forward to waving at you from a distance tomorrow!

Proud to be a Tiger,

LEADERSHIP OPPORTUNITY FOR RISING FRESHMEN
APPLICATION DEADLINE MAY 28
Dear Current 8 th  Graders,

The Chagrin Falls Educational Foundation would like to invite you to consider applying for a position on the Educational Foundation Student Board during high school. The Student Board is a student-run organization affiliated with the Chagrin Falls Educational Foundation, which offers enrichment support to the Chagrin Falls Schools.

There are currently 39 students representing grades 9-12 on the Student Board. Three adults serve as mentors for the organization (Mrs. Annie Amata, Mrs. Meg Nachtwey and Mrs. Janelle Ranieri). The Student Board meets before school at 7:10 am about once a month from September through May. We will plan and run 2-3 fundraisers. In the past, these have included Kids Afternoon Out events, Charleston wrapping paper sales and other smaller events. The funds we raise are used to host a holiday party for the students who attend the Chagrin Falls Park Community Center Young Scholars program and grants requested by Chagrin Falls teachers every spring. We volunteer at the Kids’ Book Bank and Ronald McDonald House downtown and host an annual clothing collection drive to benefit Chagrin Falls Park. The Student Board also plays an integral role in planning and executing Chagrin Falls Educational Foundation Annual Pancake Breakfast in March.

We hope our Student Board members will learn about leadership and the philanthropic process including volunteerism, fundraising and gifting decisions as well as the importance of giving back to the community and the schools. The meetings, fundraisers and grant decisions are handled entirely by the students. We expect the students to attend all meetings, serve on at least one committee, and attend or contribute to each of our fundraisers and service projects (about 3-4 per year).

Ten rising freshmen are accepted and it is a four-year commitment. If you are interested in becoming a member of the Student Board while you are a student at CFHS, please complete the application by May 28, 2020:   https://forms.gle/MBXXvw4ZcrRx8qEeA  You will be notified in July.

Look forward to hearing from you and hopefully meeting you soon!

MENTAL WELLNESS CORNER
May is Mental Health Awareness Month and KINDNESS is the theme.

Protecting our mental health is going to be necessary in order for us to cope and recover from the Coronavirus pandemic, as the psychological impacts will likely outlast the physical symptoms of the virus.

May is Mental Health Awareness Month, and it sure is a good time to really have a conversation about mental health. There have been many individuals who have worked hard over the years to break the stigma in talking about mental health. Kevin Love, for instance, has dedicated much time and effort to the topic in recent years. However, for many, when they hear the term mental health, they immediately think of all the negatives and hardships, which makes it a difficult conversation to start. This seems quite different than how we may typically think about physical health (focusing on diet, exercise, and taking care of our bodies).

I like to encourage students to shift the conversation and think about what it means to be mentally healthy. This is a positive way of having a good discussion about mental health. Students can talk about the importance of balance, self-esteem, support systems, managing emotions, etc. Think about what a mentally healthy individual looks like and how we can take steps to be more like that.

It can be a difficult topic as well because we often want to have all the answers to our kids' problems they may come to us with, and many of these problems often don't have easy answers (or even any answers at all). The best thing we can do is to take the pressure off of ourselves of always needing to have that perfect advice. If we simply listen without judgment, make ourselves available, and look to be open and have conversations, that can go a long way. Empathy and validating kids' feelings is an important part of helping them to feel understood and more comfortable talking about things.

And of course, we all need to do the same with ourselves as well. Times may be tough right now for all of us. Please reach out if I can be of any help to you or your child as we start gearing up for what will likely be a very different summer break.
