PARSHAT NOACH

Rabbi Aaron Leib

This week’s Parsha opens extolling the virtues of Noach. There is an argument among the sages as to whether or not Noach was as righteous as Avraham Avinu or if his righteousness was only relative to the generation he lived in, as indicated by the word “b’dorotov-in his generation.” Other comparisons are also made as both Noach and Avraham acted differently when faced with mass destruction of a people/civilization. Avraham prayed to save the people of Sedom, to no avail, and we do not see any such attempts by Noach in the text. Some use this to argue that indeed Noach’s righteousness was inferior. Avraham traveled around spreading the message of G-d, trying to convince the world to abandon its idolatrous ways and embrace monotheism. We do not see any such attempt by Noach to rid the world of its problems. So, not only does he not pray, but we also do not see any efforts to stop the evilness that was rampant across humanity. So what’s with Noach; how can he both be a generational tzadik and seemingly indifferent at the same time?
