A Message from our CNT President

The other day I overheard a conversation between two people catching up over coffee. It seemed they were friends in college and were in the next phase of their lives.

One had just gotten married and was looking to buy a house. The other had a new job and was talking about career growth. There was also a little chatter about wanting kids down the road.

You may be asking yourself, what this has to do with Congregation Ner Tamid? My response is… quite a lot.

The conversation made me pause to think “wow that was me 20 or 30 years ago.” I thought about how I am in a different phase of my life and can reflect on what I have learned over the years. I also thought about my retirement or cutting back a little in the next 10 years hopefully.

In addition, I thought about how refreshing or even nostalgic it is to overhear such a conversation…and that it is not a type of conversation heard …..at Congregation Ner Tamid.

Our Congregation is approaching a 20-year anniversary and unquestionably the majority of our members are 45+. Our community is predominantly Baby boomers and Gen X.

But 20 years ago, our membership was filled with young families-people in their 30’s leading, volunteering, building our school and shaping the future of CNT.

As the saying goes The only thing constant is change.

Over the years we changed and evolved our focus from a synagogue centered around a thriving religious school to a Jewish Community focused on a social and spiritual perspective which is unquestionably just as essential. Even more so after October 7, 2023.

But unlike me, CNT is not thinking about slowing down. As Cobb County grows and surrounding counties grow the need for CNT to thrive and meet the needs of the community is vital.

Therefore, in keeping an eye towards the future there is a need and focus for us to rebalance our membership to include an equal portions of members in their 20’s, 30’s, 40’s.

Shouldn’t we consider offering a Mommy and Me event and PJ Library events for young Jewish families?

Would it be beneficial to host a Young Jewish couple’s event or singles event at CNT and to host Hillel events at our Synagogue?

How about family shabbat, youth shabbat and tot shabbat events?

Think about it.

We now have 20 years of former religious school students who are now having talks about getting married, buying a first home, starting careers and needing to network with others in a community, starting preschool, and even thinking about B’nai Mitzvahs. Conversations like I heard just the other day.

There is opportunity to focus on the community needs of Gen Y and Millennials. We must and will change to ensure their needs AND our current CNT members’ needs are mutually being met and addressed.

With a focus on Community (a broader community),
