DID YOU KNOW...

...apples and honey (and pomegranates) aren’t the only symbolic foods traditionally enjoyed on Rosh Hashanah? Other foods include dates, string beans, beets, pumpkins, leeks, fish heads - who'd have thought?

And if you're a Leonard Cohen fan - his song “Who By Fire” is based on the Unetanah Tokef, which many consider the most important prayer in the High Holiday liturgy. (Listen to it here.)

SAY WHAT?

Here are just a few essentials on what we'll be hearing as we observe Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur...

Chag sameach — Literally “happy holiday,” a common greeting on Rosh Hashanah and other Jewish holidays.

Elul — The final month of the Jewish calendar, it is designated as a time of reflection, introspection and repentance.

L’shana tovah u’metukah — A Hebrew greeting for the High Holiday season that means, “For a good and sweet year.”

Avinu Malkeinu — Literally “Our Father, Our King,” this prayer is recited after the Amidah (the main prayer, said while standing) and before the Torah service. It is recited throughout the Ten Days of Repentance, from Rosh Hashanah through Yom Kippur.

Yom Tov — Literally “good day,” this is a generic term used to refer to major Jewish holidays.

TASHLICH IN GRANT PARK

First - what is Tashlich? On the first day of Rosh Hashanah, Jews traditionally proceed to a body of running water, preferably one containing fish, and symbolically cast off their sins. The Tashlich ceremony includes reading the source passage for the practice, the last verses from the prophet Micah(7:19), “He will take us back in love; He will cover up our iniquities. You will cast all their sins into the depths of the sea.” Click here to learn more about this beautiful tradition.

If you are interested in doing Tashlich, 18 Doors (an interfaith organization) is doing a fun, family oriented Tashlich and picnic in Grant Park on October 6 at 5:00 pm. Check out the information here!

FOR THE KIDS!

Origami pomegranates (pictured above)...Rosh Hashanah coloring page...photo rosh Hashanah card...Rosh Hashanah yarn art..."stained glass" fish...the list is virtually endless when it comes to crafts for Rosh Hashanah. Check out this blog (here) for these crafts and more!

COMMUNITY SERVICE DAY WITH BAGEL RESCUE

On September 15, members of our community spent the afternoon sorting approximately 4000 bagels that were "rescued" from various bakeries throughout Atlanta. After we bagged them, they were driven to programs including, but not limited to, JF&CS Food Pantry – Dunwoody; Hope Through Soap – Doraville; St. Patrick’s Church – Norcross; The Pantry at Hamilton UMC - Dacula; Sheltering Arms – Chamblee, just to name a few! It was a fantastic afternoon, not only knowing that we were making a big difference, but that we were doing it together and having fun! We can't say enough great things about Bagel Rescue, so if you are part of another organization that is looking to do community service and work with a great group, check out Bagel Rescue! (Click here and here for their Facebook and Instagram pages.) And of course, be on the lookout for OUR future community service projects!
