Welcome to Our New Administrative Coordinator
I am happy to introduce our new Administrative Coordinator, Nadine Duke. A Brooklyn (Coney Island) native, Nadine recently moved to Los Angeles from northern New Jersey, where she raised her three daughters, a 27 year old and 23 year old identical twins. She worked for many years as a substitute teacher and most recently worked as a customer service representative for a sewing machine manufacturer. A lifelong crafter, Nadine enjoys both knitting and crochet when she’s not out exploring LA. The mission of ChaiVillageLA is one that Nadine feels very strongly about, having dealt with an elderly parent who might have been able to remain in his home had these kind of services been available to him. Nadine is very excited to help ChaiVillageLA fulfill its important mission and she’s looking forward to meeting and working with all of the Village members. Be sure to introduce yourself to Nadine at our next event.

Temple Isaiah Religious School Volunteers Needed
Rabbi Zoë Klein Miles would like to invite ChaiVillageLA members to help lead Torah talk with Temple Isaiah fourth graders through an innovative program called
OUR HEVRUTA
.
Our Hevruta creates a multigenerational learning community where adult congregants (parents, grandparents, retirees, lifelong-learners) volunteer as TORAH FACILITATORS to lead circles of fourth graders in conversations about Torah and our lives.
Worried you're not up to it? Rabbi Zoë promises that you are, and you will have help. It is a rewarding and enriching experience for both the adult participants and the students. Ask village members, Ken Wolf, Stuart Goldurs, and Joel Levine about their experiences.
Our Hevruta will meet in the Social Hall on Tuesdays during Religious School from 4:45 - 5:20 PM on the following dates
:
January 9, 16, 23, 30, February 6, 13, 20, 27, and March 6, 13, 20.
You can sign up for one session, or two, or four, or however many you would like. You are always welcome to come in at any time and join a circle if you would just like to check it out first.
Here is
an introductory video
to the whole program. You will also be provided with the
OUR HEVRUTA booklet
to help guide you. The booklet contains all the texts that will be used and Rabbi Zoë will also call you and talk you through the session the week before. And if a student asks a questions that stumps the group, the religious school teachers and Rabbi Zoë will be in the room to help.
If you have any questions, please email Rabbi Zoë at
zoe@templeisaiah.com
, or call her cell phone: 310-770-3236.

Line Dancing
Great news for those of you with an interest in Line Dancing. You know, those Country Western dances that include the Tush Push, Boot Scoot Boogie, Electric Slide and Honky Tonk Attitude, and many more.
We have found a Line Dancing instructor who not only teaches the dances, but has also created many of them.
Before we go further, we need to know how many members would be interested in an ongoing Line Dancing class. It could be weekly, semi-weekly or monthly. The cost of each class would be determined by the number of members and the frequency of the lessons.
The dance space is waiting for us at Temple Emanuel! Please let us know soon so that we can take next steps.

The Shalom Hartman Institute iEngage Series Presents Jewish Values and the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict
The Video Lecture Series, featuring Rabbi Donniel Hartman, explores one of the most divisive issues affecting the Jewish people today. This program, titled
Compromise
, examines the ways in which our tradition views the idea of compromise, its relationship toward justice, the way it interacts with self-preservation, and how it shapes political and moral perspectives on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
Described by critics as a thinker whose thoughts, observations, and analysis of Israeli society are radical and refreshing, Rabbi Donniel Hartman’s observations are especially relevant to the current debate on the status of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel.
Following the video lecture, Rabbi Joel Levine will moderate a lively discussion.

The vast majority of adults want to remain in their homes and neighborhoods as they get older, but sometimes this takes a supportive community. ChaiVillageLA is a vibrant, multi-synagogue, multi-generational community that enables congregants to age in place in their own homes by providing assistance to one another and enriching each other’s lives, as part of a self-governing village supported by Jewish values.
