Meet Our Student Cantor - Suzanne Hamstra

Dear Congregants of Temple B'nai Chaim,

I am so excited to be joining you in just a few months as your Student Cantor! I look forward to getting to know you and to sharing music, prayer, and Torah with you. To begin, I want to introduce myself.

I am a rising second year cantorial student at Hebrew Union College - Jewish Institute of Religion, which means I've just finished my year of studies in Israel! Before beginning cantorial school, I was an opera singer and voice teacher.  I am originally from Santa Cruz, California, a beach town on the central coast, where I grew up in a family of folk musicians and bagel bakers. I earned my Bachelor's Degree of Music in vocal performance at The Boston Conservatory and my Master's Degree of Music from San Francisco Conservatory of Music. After having the good fortune to sing opera on both coasts of the US and in Europe and teaching voice students of all ages, I decided it was time for me to use music to serve a deeper purpose. To that end, I chose a new career which allows me to serve the Jewish people, build community, contribute to lifelong learning, and use music to feed the soul and share Torah.

I feel so blessed to get to run away from Manhattan on weekends to join you in beautiful Connecticut in order to share Shabbatot with you and work with the children in religious school! I hope you'll share some of your favorite music with me and I look forward to sharing mine with you in services. I'm so excited to foster your children's curiosity and excitement for Jewish life and music. I hope to do the same for all the whole community in t'filah, Torah study, and more. I can't wait to return to the East Coast and do my part to fuel this kehila kedosha in learning, prayer, and song!

Rabbi's Sermon - Sh'lach L'cha June 8, 2018

"In this week's Torah portion, Sh'lach L'cha, Moses chose leaders from each tribe to form a company of scouts that would journey into the land that the Israelites had been promised so long ago.  These men were given specific aspects of the land to investigate and were sent off with the hopes and the concerns of their people. They scouted the land for 40 days and came back to the camp carrying stores of huge fruit as well as other evidence of the the shocking bounty of the new land.  Upon their return, they rushed to Moses and delivered what could charitably be considered a 'mixed report of the Promised Land ..."  (Read the full sermon!)
