A Request from Ryan Sanderson!

Once upon a time, In 1973, a small patch of coral in Belize suddenly died. The only thing left was a deadly black band around the surface of the coral, exposing the dead skeleton inside. Since 2021, this same coral-killing disease has spread quickly, killing entire coral colonies in just months all over the Caribbean, into the Indo Pacific Ocean, and even to the Great Barrier Reef in Australia. It has already killed millions of coral colonies, and become known as the black band disease.

A small island in the South Caribbean, Bonaire, is a gorgeous paradise that I’ve been visiting twice a year to scuba dive since I was 11 years old. Devastated by the news of this disease, Reef Renewal Bonaire is an organization that was started in 2012 to save the beautiful coral on the island. They work with world class scientists and restoration practitioners to educate the Bonaire residents, visitors, and local communities. They do everything from creating strict rules for divers, to growing their own coral. This is so important to me because scuba diving is a big part of me and without coral, there is no underwater ecosystem. For my Mitzvah project I will be volunteering in person with Reef Renewal in December, on my next trip to Bonaire. You can make a difference too! Please help by donating to their amazing organization to support this vital work to save and restore the coral reefs in and around Bonaire. There will be a donation box in the main lobby at TBC beginning on October 2nd. SAVE THE CORAL!!!!

Wi-ACT’s Rise Against Hunger Meal-Packaging Event
(Wilton Interfaith Action Committee)

Saturday, October 19, 2024 at the WEPCO Church Complex

(36 New Canaan Road, Wilton)

Wi-Act ( Wilton Interfaith Action Committee: “We Act Together for Good!”) of which our congregation is a very active member, packages these meals using bulk ingredients and packaging equipment provided by highly rated nonprofit Rise Against Hunger, Inc. (RAH) with Wi-Act paying for the cost of those bulk ingredients and RAH transporting them to wherever in the world the need is greatest at the time of our event. These meals are served in school settings where the children served can be nourished in mind as well as in body.

This annual event brings together over 650 Christian, Hindu, Jewish and Muslim volunteers working in two-hour shifts (morning, mid-day, and afternoon) to package enough meals to feed over 400 otherwise starving children for an entire year. Children as young as 7 can participate if they accompany their parents who volunteer – and this is an intergenerational event with grandparents as well as parents and children participating! Those 13 or older can sign up in their own names; younger children accompany their parent(s).

Shift times are listed on the sign-up site: just pick the shift that works best for you.

Please bring to the Event a non-perishable food item to help those in need locally.

Sign Up for Rise Against Hunger

If you are unable to join in for this most exciting and purposeful event, please consider making a donation to cover the cost of the meal components. We need to pay for the food to be packed. Even if you do sign up to help out, please consider making a donation for the food. The more funds we collect, the more meals we will pack!!!

Donations should be made to the Tzedakah Fund with a note that it is for "Rise Against Hunger."

MOZAIC Senior Life (formerly Jewish Senior Services) is holding two educational events beginning in September ...

It is traditional to light a memorial candle at home on the eve of the yahrzeit. You may also find it meaningful while kindling the yahrzeit candle to offer prayers of remembrance or reflect on your loved one’s life. Many also choose this time to make monetary donations in memory of loved ones

Yahrzeit Memorial Plaques

When remembering loved ones who have passed away, we invite you to commemorate their lives and blessings with a memorial plaque for the TBC wall of remembrance. Ordering information is available here.

Shabbat Flower / Oneg Donation
