Federation's Open Letter to Prime Minister Netanyahu and Opposition Leader Yair Lapid

From Carin Savel, CEO of Jewish Federation of Fairfield County, 2/21/2023:

"Shalom,

"Below is a letter [LINKED HERE!] that was released from the Jewish Federations of North America today to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Opposition Leader Yair Lapid. You may view the letter in Hebrew here.

"The letter comes the day after the first portion of the judicial overhaul legislation passed its 'first reading' in the Knesset. It now goes back to the relevant committee for debate and possible amendment."

From Eric Fingerhut, JFNA CEO: "I wish I could express more optimism at this point about the potential for compromise, but it seems that the debate is becoming ever more polarized, with each side blaming the other for the tension. I believe our letter is an important contribution to the debate, though I have no doubt we will be criticized by those who think we should not speak on the subject. Given that many issues we care about would be affected by the ability of a sixty-one vote majority of the Knesset to override the Supreme Court, I have no doubt that we are doing the right thing by respectfully but strongly making known the impact of this legislation on Jews in North America.

"We will continue to keep you updated on developments.  As always, please do not hesitate to contact me if I can be of help."
