What is Yom Kippur?

"Yom Kippur is the moment in Jewish time when we dedicate our mind, body, and soul to reconciliation with our fellow human beings, ourselves, and God. As the New Year begins, we commit to self-reflection and inner change. As both seekers and givers of pardon, we turn first to those whom we have wronged, acknowledging our sins and the pain we have caused them. We are also commanded to forgive, to be willing to let go of any resentment we feel towards those who have committed offenses against us. Only then can we turn to God and ask for forgiveness. As we read in the Yom Kippur liturgy, 'And for all these, God of forgiveness, forgive us, pardon us, and grant us atonement.'"

(URJ: "Yom Kippur, Day of Atonement")

Yom Kippur Afternoon Study Session & Healing Service

"We Are All Jonah." An exploration of why at different times, we all flee – from uncomfortable conversations, truths we don’t want to own, work we don’t want to do – and what Judaism and our texts have to offer in response: The opposite of flight is presence – some might call that prayer. What is prayer and what can we learn about it and presence from the Story of Jonah?Join Cantor Harriet as she leads us in a most unexpected discovery on Yom Kippur afternoon.

Afterward will be a special Healing Service, with "Visual T'filah" also featuring beautiful music, both classical -- with our HHD Quartet -- and contemporary.

In this issue of Chailites we thank the following individuals who generously contributed to TBC during August, 2023. To everyone who has supported TBC, we offer you our most sincere thanks and heartfelt gratitude.

It is traditional to light a memorial candle at home on the eve of the yahrzeit. You may also find it meaningful while kindling the yahrzeit candle to offer prayers of remembrance or reflect on your loved one’s life. Many also choose this time to make monetary donations in memory of loved ones

Yahrzeit Memorial Plaques

When remembering loved ones who have passed away, we invite you to commemorate their lives and blessings with a memorial plaque for the TBC wall of remembrance. Ordering information is available here.

A reminder that the Federation for Jewish Philanthropy of Upper Fairfield County schedules a variety of programs that TBC members will find interesting.
