COMMUNITY IMPACT
Valerie's House Receives 2nd Grant in Less Than 3 Months
Cape Foundation partners with
nonprofit members to match donors with causes
Two years ago, Angela Melvin, founder of Valerie's House, became the first organization to join the Cape Coral Community Foundation's Nonprofit Member Program.

Valerie's House is a loving place for grieving families where children learn that loss doesn't have to limit their dreams. It is a special place for children and families in Southwest Florida to connect with one another and learn the tools to heal after they have experience the death of someone they love.

Their mission is to help children and families work through the loss of a loved one together and go on to live fulfilling lives. Their vision is that no child will grieve alone.

Nonprofit Members, just like Valerie's House, participate in Cape Coral Community Foundation's high quality educational, training and networking programs.

Membership fees support the Community Foundation's Nonprofit Education Fund to provide programs and services that strengthen the entire nonprofit business community.

The Cape Coral Community Foundation partnered with Valerie's House to present their case for support to a donor.
The result led to a $2,500 donation to support their mission.

Survey of Nonprofit Leaders Reveals
"Board Member Micromanagement is the
BIGGEST Challenge"
Every three months, Cape Coral Community Foundation releases survey results based on information collected from monthly networking sessions with Southwest Florida
leading nonprofit organizations.

According to our most recent survey of nonprofit leaders, unfortunately nothing has changed. Once again, survey results revealed that board members need to consider themselves overseers, not implementers.

When board members overstep the line between governance and management they become micromanagers.

Nonprofit leaders say board members are micromanaging when they want to:

  • Approve the choice of vendors, office equipment, software, or office furniture;

  • Participate in staff hiring and defining job descriptions (besides the CEO);

  • Contact staff members directly for information - without explicitly being invited by the CEO;

  • Create committees that duplicate staff work;

  • Send a board representative to staff meetings;

  • Attempt to manage staff and make administrative decisions;

  • Have a key to the office to be able to come and go at will (unless the organization is led by all-volunteer organization);

  • Publicly second-guess the CEO's decisions.

What can be done to avoid board member micromanagement?

  • The board chair must remind other board members of their roles and how to communicate with staff.

  • When a board hires a competent CEO, it already has adopted the basics of role differentiation between board and staff. The board must delegate management duties to the CEO.

  • How the staff gets its work done is the responsibility of the CEO and how the board manages its own tasks is the responsibility of the chair.

  • In a productive partnership, the CEO uses the board as a sounding board. The two end up formulating strategic decisions together while leaving the details of implementation to CEO and staff members.

The Cape Foundation would like to thank our nonprofit members for participating in the survey.
