Westchester Alum Earns Salutatorian Award
Written by: Tony Quattrochi, Alumni Relations

Rachel Brokenshire mastered the importance of time management while a student at St. Joseph High School. The Westchester resident successfully balanced a challenging academic schedule and a heavy load of extra-curricular activities in order to earn salutatorian of this year’s graduating class. The challenge taught her a great lesson.

“I think it’s important for students who are high achievers to not stress out,” Rachel observed. “There are so many things which are out of your control, that it’s pointless to get upset over them. I’ve discovered that, as long as you try your best, everything seems to work out.”

Out of Rachel’s control were times for meetings of the National Honor Society, Spanish Honor Society, peer ministry and Eucharistic ministry, as well as times for practices and games for softball (4 years) and volleyball (3 years). Putting aside her free time to focus on her studies was within Rachel’s control.

“I also have to thank my mom,” she said. “She was a great support and helped me to study well and complete my homework.”

“Our family is incredibly proud of the young woman Rachel has become,” said her brother, Michael Brokenshire, SJHS Class of ’05 and a social studies instructor at Notre Dame College Prep in Niles. “She has a humble work ethic and an eagerness to face new challenges.”

Those new challenges will soon begin as Rachel enters the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, where she will major in kinesiology.

“I know that living on my own and making new friends are a few of the challenges I’ll be facing, besides the academic work,” she said. “I’m looking forward to all of it.”

Congratulations, Rachel, on your academic success and best wishes for many more!
