Our Mission
"The Danville-Boyle County Chamber of Commerce exists to advance the prosperity and well-being of the business community, particularly its members, with a goal of improving the quality of life in this community."

Paula's Ponderings
Hello Chamber Members,

There is still time to join us in our newest fundraiser - and to gain some bragging rights for a year!  (A traveling trophy goes to the winning team to display for one year.) Our Chamber Steel Shoot Challenge, presented by  Bluegrass Hearing Clinic, is this Saturday, May 6.  Teams will have fun while helping the Danville-Boyle County Chamber of Commerce raise money to do our work.  Bring a team and see how you do shooting steel at Sugar Creek Range.  Check it out at www.sugarcreekrange.com  where you will find a Frequently Asked Questions section to answer all your questions and a registration form.  Or call us at 859-236-2361, ext. 120. We loved to have you join us with a team! We also welcome volunteers!

Work is also underway for our 10th Annual Teacher Academy program June 6-8. This is one way of addressing the perceived 'disconnect' between schools and businesses. This year's emphasis is on Soft Skills* applications in today's workplace.    The goals of the  Teacher   Academy  are:
-           To increase awareness among educators of career opportunities and required skills of jobs in local businesses and industries;
-           To provide educators with "real world" examples of the application of academic content
           and soft skills taught in the schools; an
-           To expand collaborative relationships among school systems and the business community.

Again this year, we are extending an invitation to  teachers  from school systems in the seven county region surrounding Danville (Boyle, Casey, Garrard, Lincoln, Marion, Mercer and Washington counties), in addition to Danville Independent, Burgin Independent, KSD and Danville Christian  Academy .  This is a regional effort because 64% of our workforce is from our surrounding area.

We want to give a special thank you to all our businesses who participate in the three day Academy by giving one-half day to visiting educators.

54th Annual SMALL BUSINESS WEEK: THANK YOU to all the businesses who support the work of the Danville-Boyle County Chamber of Commerce.  This is Small Business Week. Small businesses are the backbone of the U.S. economy. In fact, according to U.S. Census Bureau data, of the roughly six million employer firms in the country, 99.7 percent of them are small businesses, which by definition, includes businesses with fewer than 500 workers. Small businesses - those with fewer than 20 workers - make up 89.6 percent.

The Danville-Boyle County Chamber of Commerce wants to take the opportunity to thank the entrepreneurs, small business owners, and others who are in the trenches building your company every day. Our business owners work to grow small businesses, create 21st century jobs, drive innovation, and increase America's global competitiveness.  They are the backbone of our local economy supporting many of the programs, sports teams, theater programs, etc. that make up a strong community. They also supply much of the payroll taxes that help underwrite local government services.We salute your hard work,  perseverance   and dedication.

Sincerely,

Kentucky Chamber Workforce Think Tank Holds First Meeting
On Tuesday, I attended a meeting, facilitated by the KY Chamber's new Workforce Center and their new director Beth Davisson. More than 40 chambers and business people from across Kentucky attended. We discussed workforce "pain points" that are both unique and shared, finding that we all have similar issues with our workforce.  Four breakout groups focused on detailing those issues and then sharing with the larger group.  Best practices happening in chambers around the state were shared. The last session of the day focused on "Now What?" There were many possibilities identified here with the intention of continuing these discussions throughout the next year and beyond.  The Kentucky Chamber of Commerce Executives will also continue with this topic and what different chambers are doing in the workforce arena at their state conference in August.
