Matt Johnston

Real Estate Broker

Board Member of the OPRF Chamber of Commerce

Fulton Grace

As we celebrate Pride month, I find myself reflecting on the journey LGBTQ+ people have made since I came into the world in 1979. As a Realtor, people think I spend my days helping people find houses, condos, and apartments. But that is a miniscule part of the job. It's active listening and responding, something I've been working on since I started caddying in 1993. Coming out fully in 2003, embracing who I was, and facing the fear (somewhat unwarranted) of being rejected, I learned how important active listening is. During Pride month, the idea of home takes on an even deeper meaning for me. While I never was asked to leave mine, so many in the LGBTQ+ community have been forced to leave theirs.

I thought my path to real estate was anything but traditional, but I was 100% wrong. Every job, from caddying, to theater, coaching high school speech, and even managing the Buzz Cafe led me exactly where I belonged - real estate. Each role taught me about developing a relationship of trust. When guiding someone through one of the largest purchases of their lives, you must inspire a sense of trust. Being a member of the LGBTQ+ community teaches how to listen, respect, and work with people from all different walks of life. That's one of the many reasons I'm proud to serve on the Chamber Board and to be part of a business community that celebrates inclusion and connection.

I encourage you to share your story with our Chamber community. We're excited to offer a new opportunity to sponsor the Chamber Advantage newsletter. For just $250, your business, organization, or personal story can be featured in front of our largest audience. We'd love to help you connect with fellow members and neighbors. To learn more about sponsoring an upcoming edition, contact us at info@oprfchamber.org.

WEATHER PERMITTING? NEVER HEARD OF HER.

Underneath the sequins, Pride is pretty simple: people showing up for each other, out loud, and meaning it.

A storm was never going to stop these queens. They moved indoors and kept every look and every walk they came to give.

A night like this doesn't pull itself together. Huge thanks to the sponsors who put their names behind Pride this year.
