This is the Big Bopper:
During a lifetime of just 23 years, Buddy Holly of Lubbock set rock ’n roll on a trajectory that influenced the Beatles, the Stones, Dylan, Clapton and Elton. He was among the first honorees inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and is No. 13 all-time on
Rolling Stone’s
100 greatest artists. After having opened three times for Elvis, Holly moved from country to rockabilly.
“That’ll Be the Day” reached No. 1 in 1957 and “Peggy Sue” kept him there.
Casa Mañana Theatre
will present
Buddy: The Buddy Holly Story
Sept. 7-15. It’s your chance to don some black-rimmed glasses, dance in the aisle and celebrate what’s called the “World’s Most Successful Rock Musical.” The last half of the show re-enacts his last night on earth 60 years ago – the concert at the Surf Ballroom in Clear Lake, Iowa, complete with the moves of Ritchie Valens and the Big Bopper. Casa’s Lindsey Rush-ened over two tickets to opening night Sept. 7.

Two thumbs up
!
Molly Ivins is among the greatest of a long list of Texas writers. Outspoken and outrageous, liberal with venom and her politics, Ivins’ razor-sharp wit hit home with its truths and taunts. Her essence is captured in
Raise Hell: The Life and Times of Molly Ivins
Sept. 6-8 as part of
Magnolia at the Modern
. It is one of six films during weekends from Aug. 30-Oct. 6 and the
Modern Art Museum’s
Kendal (jump in the) Lake has provided two tickets to each film. Last up is
Linda Ronstadt: The Sound of My Voice
. There’s also a re-make
of After the Wedding
with Michelle Williams and Julianne Moore;
Aqualera
, a picturesque look at the power and beauty of water in its many forms; the recent release,
The Farewell,
starring Awkwafina; and
Official Secrets
, the true story of British Intelligence whistleblower Katharine Gun (Keira Knightley).

Teacher’s pet:
In 11
th

. Do not be a dropout! So, as parents and grandparents, you want a good relationship for your progeny with their teacher(s). Why not take Cheri Kirkman up on her fabulous idea. Cheri is the GM of
Gordon Boswell Flowers
and she has a "
Teacher Survival Kit
Basket" for back to school, all the things a hard-working teacher will need to relax during a busy school year, including fresh flowers, a candle, chocolates, hand soap and a sachet in its Sweet Grace fragrances. She gave one to

The Wright Stuff:
Mr. B was reading about "Excellence Through Leadership: How to get an A." He never saw one A during 13.27 years of schooling and dropping out. So Mr. B called John Wright to ask about A’s, the seminar and possibly getting his transcripts re-Wrighted. Par for the course, Mr. B was wrong about Wright. John owns
Simple Leadership Strategies
and his workshop is offered to individuals and corporations looking to prepare better leaders. So, if you want leaders
moving in the Wright direction
, let John bring this one-hour, on-site session to your company.

Are you on this bus, Gus? PAVLOV,
an
advertising/marketing firm, has a client with mid-sized buses for use in smaller cities and commercial enterprises. It developed a marketing campaign that features a guy with a full-throttle chainsaw hacking, not pruning, his delicate bonsai tree. “No one …wants to make the mistake of putting the wrong-sized fleet of buses on its roadways. The right tool can make a big difference,” said Allen Wallach, CEO of PAVLOV.
