The annual Charlevoix tradition of planting petunias is celebrating 36 years of Keeping Charlevoix Beautiful! This year we have a few new projects we are excited to announce.
The first is that we will be extending the downtown petunia baskets all the way to Carpenter Street on the south side of town. This exciting as it will both beautify the city and allow petunias to remain throughout the entire season in areas where they are not surviving. These baskets will be the same size and quality of the existing downtown baskets but at a lower height, allowing them to be viewed more easily and providing a continuum for people entering or leaving our beautiful city.
The second new initiative this year is our first annual Petunia Brew. We have partnered with Lake Charlevoix Brewing to provide a special release brew, a different one will be created each year and released to the community on planting day. This year’s new brew will be the “Main Squeeze”, a tangerine N.E. IPA. One dollar from every pint sold will support the Keep Charlevoix Beautiful operations. We are so excited for this campaign, go out and be the first to try the petunia brew, May 24, at Lake Charlevoix Brewing.
Please visit our Facebook page for details regarding this year’s planting, the Petunia Brew and more. If you would like the opportunity to support and/or become more involved in Operation Petunia, please visit our website keepcharlevoixbeautiful.org

Even teens who seem perfectly healthy may have hidden heart problems. Though the percentage is small, kids with undetected heart defects are at risk of sudden cardiac arrest. A simple 10 - 15 minute screening can detect conditions such as hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, the most common cause of sudden death in athletes. This screening does not take the place of the sports physical typically required for young athletes. Parents, please attend with your child if they are a minor.

Pre-Registration is required. Please call 1.800.248.6777 to register. CrossFit Petoskey; 345 N. Division Road.

Thursday, June 7th
5:30 - 7:30pm

On Thursday, June 7th , the principal from St. Joseph Regional Catholic School is coming to visit. There will be a reception with light hors d’oeuvres in the St. Mary Parish Center in Charlevoix from 5:30-7 that evening to meet Principal Deborah Francis and hear how the families are doing now. All are welcome and encouraged to come.

Last September, many people in our community came together to help St. Joseph Regional Catholic School of Baytown, Texas after they were hit by Hurricane Harvey. Three staff members and four student families had lost everything and it was heart breaking. In just 5 days we filled a 53’ trailer with enough couches, beds, mattresses, kitchen tables, linens, quilts, chairs, table lamps, small appliances, and so much more. Unsung heroes made this possible. They are too numerous to mention here, but know you are all in our hearts and prayers. It truly was a community effort giving their love to people in need.

School Safety Training with Charlevoix Law Enforcement
The Charlevoix Area Schools have invited local law enforcement from Boyne City, City of Charlevoix, East Jordan, and the Sheriff’s Office to use the facilities for active shooter training over two days, June 12 and 13. The purpose of the drill is to provide ongoing readiness training to local law enforcement specific to active assailants in a school setting. The training occurs between the end of school and proposed construction to the middle school to maintain realism during the training. Mike Ritter, Charlevoix Public Schools Superintendent states “This will offer our emergency responders an authentic safety and security training experience to carry out whatever tactical measures might occur during a true active shooter situation.” Charlevoix County Sheriff Chuck Vondra stated "This is an exercise that is bringing in law enforcement from all over the county so that we can train together like we would respond together. Bringing in EMS and Fire deepens interagency relationships and tests every aspect of the response to an incident of this magnitude."
Added Ritter: “We greatly appreciate the support of all of our local EMS agencies that work in concert to provide safety in our schools and communities!”
