News from the Executive Director

October was an extremely busy month and as usual, we kicked things off with our monthly Breakfast Club gathering at Brothers. This gathering of business associates who now have become friends never seems to get old. It continues to draw strong support from the membership. Each month we have our core of regulars along with the constant ebb and flow of newcomers adding their charm and personalities to the group. The “Breakfast Club” mugs are in and you’re not official until you earn your mug through your attendance. Be sure to join us and begin earning your status to be a mug bearer! Mark your calendar for the first Thursday of every month and we hope to see you soon.
Thursday evening October 3 rd , we had a capacity crowd for our first ever “ Bowling Ball “ fundraiser at Kings, MarketStreet. The sold out event included individual business and a crowd of onlookers cheering them own. Kudo’s to our friends at Kings for their hospitality and the serving of all their delicious pizza’s and appetizers keeping all of those competing teams well fed during the high stakes event. Congratulations go to our winners: First place was from Holiday Travel , second place from The Lakeside Inn and third place from Beth Israel Lahey Health . It was a terrific night of camaraderie and spirited competition for all who participated. We are already looking forward to next year’s contest!!
On Thursday evening October 10 th, we had another successful social at the West Side Social Club . Once again, the club membership opened their doors to the community to showcase their spectacular facilities while at the same time providing some delicious munchies for all to enjoy. Thank You!
Our joint seminar with the Town regarding Envision Wakefield Sustainability held at Brightview Wakefield was a very well attended educational program, invoking some terrific discussion from the focus groups formed during the meeting. We will continue to work jointly with the Town to provide these insightful and informative sessions as they become available.
We had a very exciting and successful “Women in Business” event with a number of other surrounding community Chambers which we hosted at the Four Points by Sheraton Wakefield . The presenter for the evening was our very own Wakefield Lynnfield Chamber member Justina Langone from The Remedy Exchange . The event drew high marks of praise as Justina wowed the crowd with her presentation. We can’t thank Justina enough for representing herself as well as our Chamber in such grand fashion.
On Saturday October 26 th , we held our third very successful Healthy Living Expo at the Galvin Middle School. There were over 40 vendors participating as hundreds of local residents visited each vendor while roaming the Galvin Middle School gymnasium. A special thank you to our event sponsors: Beth Israel Lahey Health , MelroseWakefield Hospital , Future of Dentistry, The Savings Bank and First Financial Trust . Also a thank you to the Wakefield Police Department, Board of Health , Move2Joy Yoga Studio and the many vendors who all contributed to making this such a successful event.
Finally, we wrapped up the month with our second annual free children’s Halloween Costume Party. This was a huge success as over 300 parents and children descended upon Four Points by Sheraton Wakefield to enjoy a fun-filled evening of games, music, crafts, dancing and balloon twisters. The evening ended with an exciting costume parade followed by trick or treating.  Another special thank you to The Four Points for helping us and allowing to host this event at their facility for the children!

I would like at this time to bid a fond “adieu” and send all of our best wishes to our good friend Tom Stapleton who will be formally retiring from WCAT  in early December 2019. Tom, as most of you are aware, is a one of a kind. His work and legacy at WCAT will not soon fade. Please join me in wishing Tom all of the best things life has to offer in his days and years to come!

Lastly, if you’re a Chamber member in good standing and have an interest in putting your talents and time to good use consider the possibility of becoming a member of the Chamber Board of Directors. Please contact me here at the Chamber office to inquire about a possible Board position or just to answer any questions you might have about duties and responsibilities.
