THE OCC "Stronger Together" AGM & Convention
|
Last Thursday, we made the trek up to Muskoka to attend the 107th OCC AGM & Convention. Jon Tuer, President & Greg Sudds, 1st Vice, joined with Chambers from across the province to embrace the theme "Stronger Together".
As I mentioned last week, we heard from the leaders of each of the parties and while there are few surprises with the messages or remarks they bring forward, we all acknowledge their presence represents their respect and recognition for what the Chamber does in terms of gathering input from its membership about how the government should be helping business so they can create and maintain a diverse, vibrant economy that supports employment, taxes and social services.
|
While this convention includes the AGM, it is also when the members gather to vote on what they believe should be the focus of the OCC (Ontario Chamber) advocacy initiatives over the next year. This year there were 29 policy resolutions submitted (back in February) for review by the membership and there were 94 registered voters on the floor. A resolution presents a problem, provides a back story and makes recommendations on how they would like their problem solved. Generally, in order for the full room to agree, the solution has to serve the chamber network across the province. It's a democratic process that provides direction to the OCC staff about what we expect them to do.
|
|
President Jon Tuer had the Belleville Chamber vote in his hands and used his power judiciously as we listened to each presenting Chamber explain their purpose and interest for these resolutions.

|
"The Children's Safety Village is pleased to invite Chamber members to join us for a tour of the village and an opportunity to learn more about our programs. We look forward to hosting you and hope to see you there!"

– serving up authentic, delicious, traditional, fire-cooked pizza from its brand new, taste-tempting mobile food truck that combines the perfect mix of treasured traditions and new technology. When we talk about traditional pizza, we are referring to the pizza that is typically found all over Italy; fire-cooked, thin, crispy and offered with a wide variety of toppings.
Cruising Canoes
–experience pontoon boat tours, history tours and water sport rentals as part of the Pop-Ups on the Bay experience this summer! Cruising Canoes will offer family friendly, waterfront sunset and sunrise tours to showcase Belleville’s waterfront. A history tour is also being offered that will shuttle you to Downtown Belleville, followed by a pontoon boat tour showcasing the shoreline. Canoes, kayaks and stand-up paddle boards are also available for rental.
Doug’s Bicycle
-supplying the Quinte area with top quality bikes, parts, and service for 40 years. Owned and operated by passionate young cyclists, Doug’s Bicycle is committed to making your next ride your best ride. Living in Belleville they know the waterfront is one of the most beautiful areas to ride and they want to share it at their waterfront bike rental pop-up. Enjoy the breathtaking scenery and wildlife as you bike along the waterfront on one of their bikes.
Golden Scoop
- Jackie Jarrell is a proud dairy farmer offering Canadian made and locally produced ice cream. The Pop-Up will also focus on people who are active and may require “energy” drinks during their visit to the waterfront area. She is fortunate to have a partnership with Biosteel through her training facility and will be selling Biosteel Freezies that are sugar free and very tasty.
“The City is thrilled to be partnering with these entrepreneurs as they create a space this season for summer fun and activity,” says Mayor Mitch Panciuk. “Having pop-up shops along the Bay allows us to activate our waterfront this summer, making it an even more incredible place to visit.”
The season’s kick-off will be celebrated with a Pop-Ups on the Bay Launch Party. Visitors and residents of the City are encouraged to join pop-up operators, community partners, City staff and members of City Council for the launch of this exciting project on our waterfront. Stay tuned for the launch party!
