President's Update

Greetings! The last three months have been an exciting whirlwind supporting Chamber events and initiatives serving our community. I have enjoyed meeting many of our partners this fall and attending the festive shop local events in December.

While I am new in this role, the needs of our desirable community have been instilled in me from birth! Growing up in Vermont, I had the opportunity to live and breathe how the Chamber benefits communities, residents, and especially business owners in a unique environment. In addition to growing up in New England, I've lived in Colorado, Texas, North Carolina, and most recently Towson, Maryland. Having experienced many locales, my perspective is balanced with a fire for smart growth while respecting our region's heritage.

I am pleased to share that we are stabilizing our team too! Welcome Aileen Price, our Partner and Event Specialist. She is an author, kind, patient, and an incredible asset to this Chamber! We continue to enjoy Racheal Broderick as our finance specialist. The small and mighty team is set up for success!

At this time I must recognize the incredible partners that have been a lifeline and supported the changes since I came on board! First, the AMAZING Board of Directors. I couldn't ask for more supportive and smart characters! Donna Frankowski-- A.K. A. The Queen has impressed me with her superior talents. Tylor Lennox served as my therapist for my first 2 weeks! Ashley Haldeman--with her copious energy and git 'er-done attitude has been essential. Rich Cropper for his spontaneous, weekly visits to ask what I need--and without asking, moves a concrete barrier from our driveway!

That brings me to The Worcester County Sheriff's Department--whom I called twice-- for different reasons...and instead of laughing, addressed the needs with courtesy and responsiveness.

Ryan McManus (Home Buddy) and Bianca Deacon (Shore Thing Promotional Products) --the Dynamic Duo that helped transform the chamber office on a Sunday afternoon!

Steve McCready (Citrus Soft) did a phenomenal power wash in the not-so-warm December temps! Tiffany and Harry (JDog and Stewart Builders Group) were so gracious and hauled away some old stuff that accumulated in the office, Mary (A Bagel And...) came through with a fantastic lunch and space for our Veterans Services roundtable. Special thanks to Kerrie Bunting, for keeping her pulse on the Chamber and offering her help through this transition as well as Maryland's Coast, Worcester County, and our neighboring Chambers have been extraordinary support systems too!

And so many more have welcomed me with wide, open arms--literally! I have found my people. I am extremely grateful to each of you.

Hope to see you all at the Coastal Delmarva Chamber of Commerce Winter Mixer on Wednesday, January 22nd at Ocean Downs Casino! I've heard it is the most impactful networking opportunity on the Eastern Shore. I've included more information below.

I look forward to continued service to our county and local community. Cheers to a beautiful, bold, and bright 2025!

Your friend,

Amity

“Fostering a deep understanding of civics and government among our young students is critical to the vibrancy of democracy and civic life in America. The National Civics Bee® provides a unique platform for them to not only showcase their knowledge but also become active and engaged citizens of the future,” said Hilary Crow, vice president of civics at the U.S. Chamber foundation.

The Worcester County Chamber of Commerce in Ocean Pines proudly announces the launch of the 2025 National Civics Bee®, an initiative aimed at encouraging more young Americans to engage in civics and contribute to their communities. Hosted in partnership with The Civic Trust® of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation, the competition across Maryland’s Eastern Shore will inspire middle schoolers to become better informed about American democracy, to engage respectfully and constructively in the community, and to build greater trust in others and institutions.

Middle school students in 6th, 7th, and 8th grade from public, private, charter, and home schools are invited to take part in the first-round civics essay competition. After a distinguished panel of judges review the essays, the top 20 students will be selected to advance to their local competition: an in-person live event featuring two rounds of civics questions followed by a Q&A round to test their civics knowledge. The Worcester County Chamber of Commerce in Ocean Pines will host its local competition in March or April. The local finalists and top winners will receive various prizes, including prizes worth at least $500 for the first-place student.

Participants in the National Civics Bee® will have the chance to gain recognition for their civics knowledge and skills and compete for prestigious prizes throughout the competition. The competition enables students to explore issues that matter to their communities, furthering their understanding of civic engagement and fostering responsible citizenship. Winners from each of the local competitions across Maryland will be invited to take part in the state finals. The first-place winner of the state finals will receive a trip to Washington, D.C. to compete for prizes worth at least $50,000 during the national championship in the Fall of 2025.
