A Note from Neil

Hello and Hadih,

During a sobering presentation to delegates at the Canadian Chamber of Commerce AGM in October, Abacus Data CEO David Coletto outlined the crisis Canada faces. He then offered an opportunity – in the form of a challenge – for Chambers and the business community.

Based on his company’s polling data over the past several years, Coletto said Canadians are locked into a scarcity mindset. They constantly worry about short-term survival, lying awake at night wondering if they’ll still have a job next week/next month/next year and if they’ll have enough money to pay the bills to stay in their homes and keep their businesses going.

Worse, Canadians have now also adopted a precarity mindset. Looking further down the road to the years and decades ahead, they see nothing but uncertainty for our communities, our country and our world. We live in precarious times and there is no easy answer to the question “will we be OK?”

The opportunity for Chambers of Commerce, Coletto argued, is to position themselves as “agents of reassurance.” The Prince George Chamber – and many others like it across Canada – is over a century old and was instrumental in building this community. We’ve been through plenty of tough times before and we endured by coming together to face the challenges head-on. This time is no different, so let’s get busy.

That means the Prince George Chamber is adopting a “sword and shield” approach for 2026.

With the sword, we will keep fighting on behalf of our members for safer streets and better care for vulnerable, suffering citizens. With the shield, we will do everything we can to protect and nurture the entrepreneurial spirit of business owners and operators, celebrating their success and encouraging future growth.

Here’s some of what we’ll be doing with our shield over the next 12 months:

  • On Jan. 20, the Chamber will host its annual True North Business Development Forum, a day of celebration of the fantastic collaborative efforts between industry and communities across Prince George and the region.
  • On March 31 and April 1, the Chamber – in partnership with Community Future Fraser Fort George and the City of Prince George – will host the second annual B2B Expo, bringing together small businesses to explore ways to grow and prosper together.
  • On Oct. 3, the Chamber will hosts its 41st Annual Business Excellence Awards to recognize the very best of the Prince George business community.
  • On Oct. 21, during Small Business Week across Canada, the Prince George Chamber will celebrate its 115th birthday.

And here’s some of what we’ll doing with our sword over the next 12 months, starting next week:

  • On Dec. 10, Prince George Chamber past president Cathy McKay, advocacy committee chair Dr. Ron Camp, and I will attend the BC Chamber’s annual luncheon with Premier and Cabinet, where we will share the results of the Safe Streets Rally we hosted at CN Centre in October and invite them to meet with our members in January, when the Premier and other Cabinet members will be here in January to attend the BC Natural Resources Forum.
  • In January, the Chamber will makes its budget recommendations to Prince George City Council.
  • In May, the Chamber will partner with its community Chamber colleagues across the region to advocate on joint issues of interest at the North Central Local Government Association in Prince George.
  • In June, the Chamber will attend the BC Chamber AGM in Fort St. John, collaborating on policy resolutions for the provincial government’s consideration.
  • In October, the Chamber will attend the Canadian Chamber AGM in Victoria, collaborating on policy resolutions for the federal government’s consideration.

To be a credible agent of reassurance in these difficult times, the Prince George Chamber needs more than a “can do” attitude to combat the scarcity and precarity issues we all face. That’s why we’re adopting a “must do” approach, wielding both a sword and a shield on behalf of our members.

We look forward to working with you and for you.

All the best over the holiday season and in 2026,

Neil
