A Note from Neil

Hello and Hadih.

The Chamber’s True North Business Development Forum happens next Tuesday at the Coast Hotel. The forum is one of our two major annual events, the other being the Business Excellence Awards. While the two events have different agendas, their strategic goals of bringing people together to celebrate business accomplishments and inspire future success are the same.

True North is an interesting name. What does it mean?

I’m not the first person to point out that North (capitalized, not lowercase) is not about direction or geography. North has a dual mystique attached to it, a deadly wilderness teeming with life, a place where people can disappear into the unknown and find themselves.

North also means something to Northerners. While Prince George is geographically Central BC, we identify as Northern and Northerners (to the chagrin of our friends in the Peace and our cousins north of 60). Part of the identity is what we’re not. Just as many Canadians celebrate being a Canadian for what it isn’t (American), in the Canadian context, Northerners are sure of one thing: they’re not Southerners.

Not only are folks who live in Central and Northern BC not Southerners (that is, residents of Kelowna, Vancouver or Victoria), they don’t want to be too much like them, they want little of their lifestyle, and they would rather visit than actually live in their crowded cities. North is rural and remote and the people who live in the North are resilient and resourceful. North is colder and quieter and the people who live in the North are warmer and more boisterous.

Resilient and resourceful, warm and boisterous also describes the entrepreneurial spirit of Northerners. That’s what’s on full display at the True North Business Development Forum.

We’re so proud to host True North and celebrate that Northern spirit.

All the best to you and your business,

Neil
