Member Feature: Rotary

Rotary has changed. Its purpose hasn’t.

What comes to mind when you hear “Rotary? If you picture a room full of businessmen in suits, you may be thinking of Rotary as it was 50 years ago.

One of Rotary’s most significant changes came in 1987, when women began joining clubs. Since then, Rotary has continued to welcome people with different backgrounds, professions and perspectives—and to find more ways for them to take part

Today, members connect through lunch meetings, service projects, committee work and social gatherings. Some bring professional skills; others bring fresh ideas, practical help or a willingness to learn. What brings them together is the chance to turn good intentions into action.

You can see Rotary’s impact all around Prince George. Local Rotary clubs have contributed to the Rotary Hospice House, Rotary community gardens and Rotary Soccer Fields—places that have made a lasting difference for families in our community. Rotary members also join efforts around the world to end polio and improve access to clean water and sanitation.

Service above self, friendship, and community remain at Rotary’s heart. What has changed is who gets to be part of Rotary and the many ways members can contribute.

If you’ve wondered whether Rotary might be for you, come to a meeting. Meet the people, hear what they’re working on and see where your ideas take you.

For more information, check out Rotary’s website at https://portal.clubrunner.ca/758/ where there are links to all the clubs in Prince George.

Note from the Executive Director

Hello and Hadih.

It’s hard to get the attention of government decision makers in Victoria and Ottawa from Prince George and north-central BC. A helpful way to amplify our voice is to have the BC and Canadian Chambers of Commerce lobbying on our behalf. To do that, we have to make a strong business case to our fellow Chambers of Commerce that government investment in this region is good for the province and the country.

At the Canadian Chamber of Commerce AGM last week in Victoria, a policy resolution from our Chamber, with support from the regional Chambers, calling on the federal government to invest in additional rail, highway and bridge infrastructure in Northern BC as part of the development of a nationally significant trade corridor was approved.

This is important because this policy now becomes a Canadian Chamber of Commerce priority when lobbying to the federal government about what its economic development spending priorities should be.

The Timmins, Ontario, Chamber of Commerce also backed our resolution. As a Northern Ontario Chamber, they clearly understand the challenges around getting distant government officials in urban centres to see the opportunities and benefits of rural and remote economic development. Their support was significant, as they urged their fellow Ontario Chambers to appreciate the national scope of our resolution.

Canadian Chamber policy resolutions require a two-thirds majority vote to pass, so a resolution not endorsed by the Ontario Chamber and its members is doomed to fail.

That political reality forces us in BC – and in our region in particular – to prioritize our ask and then make a compelling, data-driven business case deserving of both provincial support from our friends to the south (the same resolution was passed in June at the BC Chamber AGM) and national backing.

The other big win the Prince George Chamber took from the Canadian Chamber AGM came from a new partnership between the Chamber and UNBC. This fall, Abigail Moe and Daniel Jenniss, two fourth-year UNBC political science students, are earning course credits to research and develop policy resolutions for the Prince George and north-central BC Chambers to bring forward to next year’s BC and Canadian Chamber conferences for consideration.

UNBC sponsored Abigail and Daniel’s travel and accommodation to Victoria and the Canadian Chamber waived their delegate fees so the two students could see the national Chamber network in action, particularly around setting policy priorities.

David Pierce, the Canadian Chamber’s vice-president of government relations, met with the students to talk about the importance of the policy work they are doing. He then made sure the students had the opportunity to spend a moment with Jill McKnight, the federal veteran affairs minister and associate minister of national defence, after she spoke to the national Chamber delegates. That was especially valuable to Abigail, whose dad is a veteran.

Minister McKnight’s staff has already followed up with our Chamber to collaborate on the Veteran Employer Recognition program she unveiled last week in Victoria. Do you employ a veteran or someone with the reserves with the Rocky Mountain Rangers? Your business should be recognized for that, because you deserve it and because it encourages other businesses to hire veterans and reservists. Drop me a line and let the Chamber help you with that!

All the best to you and your business,

Neil
