Keeping the Military Bases in Monterey - The Latest Report

Today (Tuesday, May 16), the Monterey City Council will receive an informational document (meeting agenda item 15) entitled “Monterey Regional Compatible Use Study.” It recommends local government planning strategies to avoid land use conflicts with the existing military bases in Monterey County, including the Presidio of Monterey and the 15 operations within Naval Support Activity Monterey (Naval Postgraduate SchoolNaval Research Laboratory MontereyFleet Numerical Meteorology and Oceanography Center, etc.).

While we recognize arguments of Monterey Peninsula residents who think the community would be a better place to live without the military, your Chamber of Commerce has a priority based on economic prosperity to keep the military bases in the City of Monterey. We have a special interest in ensuring sufficient water supply, housing that’s affordable for visiting and permanent personnel, a well-maintained local transportation network, and quality schools for military families. We support the work of the Monterey Bay Defense Alliance in maintaining supportive local conditions for the bases, so that other locations (such as Fort Huachuca in Arizona) do not develop a superior argument for moving bases there.
