Movie Morning on Fri. Apr. 8 at 10am. If you're a fan of gripping historical dramas and/or Meryl Streep, come join us for our next Movie Morning! Inspired by true events, this film explores the passion and heartbreak of women who risked everything in their fight for equality.
Let's Talk About It Virtual: Illinois Women and the Fight for the Vote on Wed. Apr. 13 at 7pm. A century ago, Illinois women fought a long, hard battle for full citizenship and the chance to improve society through their electoral power. In 1913 they won an important victory: the right to vote in federal and municipal elections. In 1919, Illinois was the first state to ratify the 19th amendment granting all American women the right to vote. Join us to hear Lori Osborne, director of the Evanston Women's History Project, present the realities surrounding these historic events. Let’s Talk About It: Women’s Suffrage is a humanities discussion project from the American Library Association (ALA) supported by the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH).
Illinois Creoles, French Canadians, and Louisiana Cajuns: A Continental Story on Thu. Apr. 14 at 7pm. Musician and Illinois Road Scholar, Dennis Stroughmatt, will take us on a journey of discovery where we will hear the history of the French colonists arrival, the French dialects they still speak, and the unique music they still perform. Through story and song played on “Creole Fiddle,” we'll also learn how the French of “The Illinois Country” serve almost as a time capsule for their cousins to the north and south. Illinois Humanities is supported in part by the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) and the Illinois General Assembly [through the Illinois Arts Council Agency (IACA)], as well as by contributions from individuals, foundations and corporations. Any views, findings, conclusions, or recommendations expressed by speakers, program participants, or audiences do not necessarily reflect those of the NEH, Illinois Humanities, IACA, our partnering organizations, or our funders.
