2021 Manufacturing Week Held September 27th - October 1st
Manufacturing Week Featured Tours, Workshops, and a Special First Friday Breakfast Manufactuirng Panel
It was important to highlight during Manufacturing Week our region's ability to produce skilled individuals for advanced manufacturing and other positions. These positions will be essential in our ability to thrive for the next 20 years and beyond. Manufacturing represents approximately 20% of our regional Gross Domestic Product in the Fort Smith MSA. More than 18,000 residents work in Advanced Manufacturing in this region.

We are grateful to the manufacturers that allowed us access to learn more about this local industry. Special thank you to our First Friday Breakfast manufacturing panel speakers that shared their insights and perspectives on doing business in the advanced manufacturing world of today and what the future holds in this industry during the event.

The panel was moderated by Jason Green, President - Human Resources for ABB's NEMA Motors Division. Panelists included Michael Barr, President of WeatherBarr Windows and Doors; Heidi Raynor, Human Resource Generalist for TRANE Technologies; and Andrew Welch, Director of Operations at Rheem Fort Smith.
Fort Smith Chamber's Junior Leadership Academy Gives a Behind the Scenes Look into our Region's Workforce & Economic Development Landscape
Learn More About the Junior Leadership Academy Program
The goal of Junior Leadership Academy (JLA) is to teach and mentor a diverse group of High School Juniors from Sebastian County area schools on effective and positive ways of leadership and community pride. We hope to inform and prepare these students to become the future workforce of our community. Students have the opportunity to participate in this team-based learning program, which will introduce them to potential employers, business leaders as well as community leaders in our region.
We do not ask our JLA students to pay tuition to take part in the program. Our chamber members have graciously sponsored our students each year and we are so grateful for their support! Our goal is to have a sponsor for all 34 JLA students. So far, we have 28 out of our 34 students sponsored for this year. Please consider contributing $250 to "Sponsor A Student" for our JLA Class VI!
If you are interested in sponsoring a student, please email Hannah Cabe at hcabe@fortsmithchamber.com or call 479-783-3111.

This year, the students will learn about:
• Business and Finance
• Advanced Manufacturing & Technology
• Healthcare
• Public Service & Military
• Workforce Development

The JLA Class VI kicked off in August 2021 with a dinner event to recognize each participant & then a day Retreat to build on their leadership & communication skills!

So far, the class has already gone through its first two sessions of the year:
In the first session, “Business and Finance”, the class took personality assessments to learn more about themselves and working with others, learned about building a business plan and tools and resources that are available to small businesses. They got to meet with a local business owner and Chamber member to learn how they got started and the challenges they have faced. Then they toured The Bakery District.

In the second session, “Advanced Manufacturing & Technology”, the class toured a local manufacturing plant. They also heard from speakers from other local companies about their facilities and the job opportunities available. At the end of the day, the students had a team challenge where they identified items that are made right here in the River Valley!
