Welcome New Friend Of The Chamber - Gena Canning
Canning is part of the third generation owner-operators of Pine State Trading, along with her brother Keith Canning and cousin, Nick Alberding, who is CEO.
She grew up in Augusta, went to Hebron Academy and then onto American University in Washington, D.C. Growing up, she worked in the family business, often stocking the warehouse. Like many young Mainers, she had visions of a life outside of the Pine Tree State.

Alert Regarding H-28 and J-1 Workers
|
The battle continues regarding the H-2B visa cap. In July, the Trump administration allowed a one-time increase of 15,000 visas, which expires September 30, 2017. The increase does not affect the H-2B program in future fiscal years, meaning businesses across the country will be scrambling to secure what they need from only 66,000 visas.
Additionally, the J-1 visa exchange program is under fire. According to the Wall Street Journal, the White House's latest review includes summer work-travel programs that bring more than 100,000 students to the U.S. each summer. The Council on International Educational Exchange (CIEE) recently sent a letter to interested parties containing updates and outlining possible changes cited from numerous sources and documents. This urgent information includes the following:
- Senior White House staff have taken the position that J-1 privately funded exchange programs should be significantly restricted, if not eliminated.
- All J-1 programs would be effected (intern, trainee, camp counselors, and au pairs).
- The J-1 Summer Work Travel program could be wiped out entirely, with an adoption of this plan happening as soon as September.
What can you do to help prevent these changes from happening? If you are impacted in any way by these programs and the tight labor market, you need to reach out to Maine's Congressional Delegation immediatelyand let them know how your business will be affected by these changes. I have provided our members' D.C contact information below as well as their website links to send emails and to find local Maine phone numbers.

Maine Coast Stone Symposium Gala Celebration
From granite for some of the country's most significant public buildings to slate for roof tiles, commercial mining and stone working has thrived in Maine since around 1800. The sector's evolution affected transportation by both sea and rail, while technological advances changed the industry in significant ways. Today, Maine stone artists and artisans still use many traditional techniques to create everything from garden benches to world-renowned public architecture.
The Boothbay Railway Village hosted a month-long celebration of the history, art and culture of Maine's stone industry. Included were educational programs, a history exhibit, and a 10-day sculpture symposium investigating the ties between technology, industry and the creative world, culminating with a Gala Celebration held on Monday, August 21, 2017.

In light of all the negativity going on in our country and even in our community, Topside Inn wanted to do something with a positive message.
Owners, Buzz and Mark have been thinking of ways they can make a difference - sometimes just doing what you do is the best way to reach out to people and make a positive difference.
For the month of September we will be opening the Inn
to the public to join our guests for breakfast to benefit our local food pantry.
Here are the details:
We will be taking reservations for up to 8 people each day,
in addition to our inn guests.
Breakfast is served from 8:00 - 9:30 AM daily,
guests can arrive anytime up to 9:30AM
The cost is $25 per guest -
all proceeds will go to benefit the Boothbay Region Food Pantry!
Additional donations are welcomed!

Signed by Shawn Lewin, interim president, the announcement also informed members of Patricia Seybold's decision to leave the board of the Health and Wellness Foundation so she could focus her efforts on the Boothbay Region Health Center.

Boothbay Charities Classic Golf Tournament.
This is our 27th year of being able to touch the lives of so many. NFL Hall of Famer, Otto Graham, embraced this tournament, and together with his wife Beverly have been responsible for its' growth and success.
We have several businesses that play an important role in supporting the Boothbay Charities Classic. We are a non-profit organization which raises funds to support its primary function, Special Olympics Maine.
The three day event starts on Thursday evening Sept 21st with a meet and greet for celebrities, a practice round of golf on Friday the 22nd for celebrities and major sponsors and the tournament on Saturday, September 23, 2017.
With the support of many local businesses, volunteers and participants, we were able to donate $60,000.00 to Special Olympics Maine in 2016, after expenses.
We hope that you will support this cause by
donating something for our
Silent/Live Auction.
If you can donate something from your business
please call 1-800-564-3195 ext 2302 or 207 380 7770.
