The Ham Story
Rethinking Habits That No Longer Serve Us
Humans are creatures of habit, and that can be both a strength and a stumbling block. Habits help us handle routine tasks efficiently, freeing our minds for creativity and problem-solving. But sometimes we keep doing things without remembering why.
Take the “Ham Story.” For years, a family tradition involved cutting the ends off a ham before baking it. When asked why, the answer was always, “It’s how my mother did it.” Tracing it back, they discovered the great-grandmother only did this because her pan was too small. What began as a practical solution turned into an unquestioned tradition, passed down long after it was necessary.
It’s a simple story with a powerful lesson: habits can outlive their purpose. Whether in life, work, or relationships, it’s worth asking—are my habits still serving me, or am I just cutting the ends off the ham?
True growth begins when we pause, question, and allow space for change.
What habits do you need to revisit, to ensure they are still relevant?
