Packed room for Coffee & Community

A packed room gathered for our recent Coffee & Our Community conversation on homelessness and housing instability in the Detroit Lakes area.

Panelists Ally Hefta, Sara Peterson and Meagan Hernandez shared what homelessness looks like locally, the barriers individuals and families face, and the resources available. The conversation also got attendees thinking about how we can better come together to connect people with the help and support they need.

For the Chamber, these conversations are part of building a stronger community. A strong business community depends on people being able to live, work and build a life here — making housing an important part of our workforce, economic vitality and quality-of-life conversations.

Coffee & Our Community is a partnership between the Detroit Lakes Regional Chamber of Commerce and League of Women Voters. Thank you to Lake Region Builders Association for sponsoring the program, Homesweet Bake House for the coffee and pastries, Becker County Museum for hosting, and Fundamental Technologies for recording the event.

New Report Looks at Minnesota’s Business Competitiveness

Minnesota businesses continue to invest, expand and develop their workforce, but challenges remain when it comes to the state’s ability to compete for future business growth.

The Minnesota Chamber Foundation’s Grow Minnesota! program recently released its annual State of Business Retention and Expansion in Minnesota report. The findings point to continued business expansion and growth in several advanced industries, along with strong employer investment in workforce training and upskilling.

At the same time, the report identifies areas to watch, including Minnesota’s competitiveness with other Midwestern states, slowing manufacturing growth and job losses in some higher-wage and tradeable industries.

What does it mean for Minnesota’s economy and our ability to compete for future growth? Take a deeper look at the findings in the full report.
