City of Marshall Indoor Recreation Facility Study
The City of Marshall recently engaged with 292 Design Group, in coordination with Ballard and King, to conduct a feasibility study of an indoor recreation facility as well as conduct a feasibility study evaluating future operation options for the existing Marshall Area YMCA, currently owned by the Marshall Area YMCA.
The city recognizes that in making decisions to provide new and modern infrastructure, a prudent and fiscally responsible approach is to look critically at existing facilities to determine potential gaps, duplications, and redundancies. While community interest may be high in building new facilities, the costs of carrying under-performing and antiquated facilities can be significant.
The identification of facility needs requires a multitude of input that measures various factors, such as public engagement, socio-demographic analysis, trends in sport and community recreation facility provision and participation, and facility condition, design, utilization, and distribution. Each of these factors will be explored through this study.
The resulting goal of this study is to obtain a comprehensive needs assessment of current and future indoor recreation needs of our residents and an analysis of the feasibility of constructing and operating an indoor recreation facility and maintaining the Marshall Area YMCA as a viable facility for future years.
We have scheduled an opportunity for you to provide input on existing and future recreation needs:
Monday, September 26, 2022
at 12:00 Noon, 2:00 PM or 6:00 PM
(please choose one or all of these meetings to attend)
Red Baron Arena and Expo - Bluepeak Club Room
1651 Victory Drive Marshall
We appreciate your time and input. For more information, please contact Amy VanKeulen at amy.vankeulen@ci.marshall.mn.us or 507-537-6770.

Glik's is Celebrating 125 Year of Business
COLLINSVILLE, IL, September 20, 2022
Glik’s, the 14th oldest retailer in the United States, announced today that the company is celebrating its 125th Year Anniversary the week of October 3rd - 9th, 2022.
To say thank you to their customers, the company released a video celebrating their 125th year in business on YouTube.
“Our 125th Anniversary is a dream come true! As a young child I gained a passion for the business from my father who talked almost every night about his exciting day at Glik’s. At a young age, it was a gift to know what business path I wanted to pursue,” said President/CEO Jeff Glik.“While I haven't been around for all 125 years of our history, joining the family business has been my dream since I was a child. I didn't answer "fireman" or "astronaut" when asked ‘what do you want to be when you grow up?’ I always answered ‘I want to be a buyer at Glik's.’ Fast forward many years and today, I feel an immense gratitude for being able to join this business, family by my side.” Said Jeremy Glik, Women’s Buyer.
“I am incredibly honored to be a part of the 5th generation to work in the family business alongside my cousin and each of our fathers. Here at Glik’s everyone is a part of the family, and we have a great team that is ready to take this company far beyond 125 years.” Said Elliot Glik, Young Men’s Buyer. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statics (BLS), only 25% of all businesses ever make it past 15 years. Even more rare is to see a family business that continues to thrive. Glik’s has defied all the odds as their 5th generation family members joined the company in 2020 and 2021. “Less than 3% of fourth generation businesses survive. Yes, a 97% chance of failure. Well, the fourth generation, and now the fifth generation join the great people at Glik’s to ‘beat the odds’. Our company is full of energy, excitement, and passion and we are excited to celebrate 125 years and many more down the road,” said Jeff Glik. The Glik family grown the company from a horse drawn wagon, to one of the first strip mall stores, to over 70 brick and mortar locations as well as an online store.
“Over my last 40 years I have seen so much change in our business and being able to change with the trends has been exciting. Our business has grown because we have been flexible within our core business,” Jim Glik, Vice President and 4th generation family member, said.
In order to celebrate this historic milestone, Gilk’s is pulling out all the stops. Included in the celebrations are the following:
· Oct 3-9 - 25% off the entire store (some exclusions apply)
· Oct 3-9 – Each store will be raffling off a tote bag filled with popular products. Winner will be picked on Oct 10th
· Oct 3 – $125 – Gift card giveaway on the @GliksOfficial Instagram
· Oct 4 - Give Back Tuesday, Each store has chosen a nonprofit to receive 10% of the sales on 10/4
· Oct 4-9 – Ten tote bags filled with popular products will be raffled off through the @GliksOfficial Instagram.

Planning assistance to help communities develop active transportation plans
ST. PAUL, Minn.
Thirteen Minnesota cities and counties will receive consultant support as part of a $400,000 Planning Assistance contract to help create active transportation plans, according to the Minnesota Department of Transportation.
These Active Transportation Program Planning Assistance awards connect communities with a consultant team. The consultants analyze existing conditions, engage the community, identify ways to improve infrastructure and encourage the use of active transportation. They provide monthly reports, and MnDOT reviews them to ensure progress on plans.
“Providing these technical assistance opportunities offers communities the chance to envision and ultimately implement improvements that make active transportation safe and convenient for people in the places where they live, work and play,” said Nancy Daubenberger, MnDOT commissioner. “These also help reduce the amount of vehicle miles traveled and improve local transportation options.”
MnDOT's Active Transportation Program provides grants for planning, education, engineering studies and infrastructure investment related to walking, biking and rolling. It also supports Minnesota Strategic Highway Safety Plan goals by making these activities easier and more accessible.
The Minnesota Legislature created the Active Transportation program in 2018 and provided funding for the program during the 2021 legislative session. Communities are not required to provide matching funds. Plans call for these initiatives to begin this fall.
Parks and Trails Master Plan:
Marshall: Marshall’s Parks and Trails Master Plan will assist the community in identifying gaps, understanding current and future needs for a diverse population, while enhancing connections to regional resources such as Camden State Park.
