City of Marshall Awarded SMAC Art Legacy Project Grant

City of Marshall Awarded SMAC Art Legacy Project Grant
Grant funds will be utilized to support 150th community art project

Marshall, MN –The City of Marshall is proud to announce it is the recipient of the Southwest Minnesota Arts Council (SMAC) Art Legacy Project Grant. In honor of Marshall's 150th Anniversary, the $20,000 in awarded funds will be dedicated to a large-scale piece that will be created as a tribute to the community and its residents. The art piece will include a metal sculpture with mosaic murals to showcase imagery that will take viewers through Marshall’s history.

Independence Park was chosen as the location for the 150th community art piece due to the park’s visibility from Highway 23 and the high volume of visitors to the park. The community-based art project will bring people together to work alongside the artist to create a stunning piece that will be enjoyed for years to come.

“The city is excited to get this project started and we look forward to the community engagement that this will cultivate,” said Mayor Bob Byrnes. “This art piece will highlight our community and be a welcoming beacon for visitors and newcomers to Marshall.”

The 150th anniversary planning committee will be working with artist Tamara Isfeld who was selected based on her background in the arts. Isfeld is a renowned local artist who has extensive experience in murals, mosaic work, and many other art mediums. The committee has full confidence in her ability to successfully carry out the vision for this project.

“I am so excited and honored to be working on this public art project in Marshall,” shared Isfeld. “The goal of the project is to get the community involved and feeling connected to create a large-scale beautiful mosaic design.”

Isfeld has strong ties to the Marshall community through her art and education at Southwest Minnesota State University. By selecting an artist that knows the area, Isfeld will be able to design a piece that is a true reflection of the Marshall community. This piece will be an iconic element within the city and will be a tribute to all residents of this area including past, present, and into the future.

There will be multiple opportunities for the community to be involved in the creation of this art piece throughout the duration of the 150th anniversary celebration season. This activity is funded in part with a grant from the Southwest Minnesota Arts Council made possible by the voters of Minnesota, thanks to a legislative appropriation from the arts and cultural heritage fund.
