Sturdy all-terrain wheelchairs will help some disabled state park visitors explore in new ways
By early summer, a few Minnesota state parks will offer a means for disabled visitors to move through trail landscapes in ways they maybe never thought possible.
Five parks will have an Action Trackchair for use — part all-terrain vehicle, part beefed-up electric wheelchair, and designed with tank-like treads to navigate rugged terrain if necessary.
A pilot project by the Department of Natural Resources, the wheelchairs are located at Camden (Lynd), Crow Wing (Brainerd), Maplewood (Pelican Rapids) and Myre-Big Island (near Albert Lea) state parks. A fifth chair will be placed soon, and all should be available to use by early summer, said Jamie McBride, a DNR parks and trails consultant. The specialized chairs are made by Action Manufacturing in Marshall, Minn., and cost $14,500 apiece.
Plans to get these in some Minnesota parks began about two years ago. McBride said sustainability was top of mind when deciding which parks received chairs. Some criteria included trail lengths, surfaces and their condition; the staff's capacity to manage use of the Trackchairs; the presence of rare plants and invasive species; and physical barriers.

Celebrating a new era
EverSpring Inn & Suites holds open house to showcase hotel renovations
MARSHALL — By now, lots of area residents may have seen the new look for the outside of the EverSpring Inn & Suites, or visited the Tavern 507 restaurant. But there’s also been a lot more going on at the hotel over the past year, staff said. That was why the hotel was welcoming members of the public in for tours during a Tuesday evening grand opening.
“We’ve tried to make it a celebration, something fun,” said Jason Davis. Davis, the regional sales manager for Bird Dog Equity Partners, officially cut the ribbon for EverSpring on Tuesday afternoon.
Marshall Area Chamber of Commerce President Brad Gruhot said it’s been good to see EverSpring in the community. The hotel is a prominent business on that corner of East College Drive, he said.
The Sioux Falls-based Bird Dog Equity Partners bought the former Ramada location in Marshall in 2020. Bird Dog owns and manages hotels in Minnesota, North Dakota, Iowa, Nebraska and Wisconsin. Starting in January 2021, EverSpring began renovating the hotel in stages, said property manager Robin Bucholz.
“The end result is pretty fantastic,” he said. “A lot of work and time has gone into the renovations,” Davis said.
Tuesday’s open house allowed visitors to tour through several renovated hotel rooms, as well as the pool area, events center and Tavern 507.
“We decorated everything in decades,” Davis said. “The idea is, when people first come into the lobby, we’re in the 1920s,” Bucholz said of the grand opening.
Period music and decorations, and EverSpring staff members in costume, welcomed guests to different eras from the ’20s to the 1980s. Each stop on the tour had refreshments and a chance to enter prize drawings. “It’s definitely a big team effort,” Bucholz said of the celebration. “It’s been a ton of fun to organize, and a ton of fun to do it.”
Bucholz said the renovations at EverSpring aren’t completely finished yet. The final two phases of guest room renovations are planned to be finished by June.
“It’s been really fun seeing all the changes,” said Julia Stuckey, assistant manager of Tavern 507. She said there’s been lots of good feedback from people stopping in at the Tavern. “A lot of customers walked in the door and didn’t expect things to be so different.”
Bucholz said the hospitality industry has seen a lot of changes and challenges over the past couple of years. He and Davis said EverSpring plans to be creative in getting people’s attention and bringing in customers.

Marshall Community Foundation Spring Grant Cycle
|
|
The Marshall Community Foundation (MCF) is pleased to announce that our spring grant cycle has begun. We are accepting applications from Marshall non-profits to support the great work they do in our community.
Supporting documents for the organization or grant application can be uploaded via the “Supporting Information” section, by clicking “Choose File” to upload all supporting documents.
The deadline for completion is end of day Friday, April 1. Please email give@marshall-cf.org if you have any questions with the application.
Grant requests may be submitted for up to $5,000 and must align with the foundation's priorities of:
• Community Improvement
• Diversity
• Wellness
• Youth Development
We prefer to fund new/enhanced programs and partnerships or one-time projects. Please be as detailed as you can in the project description.
The Marshall Community Foundation is one of over 20 community foundations established via partnership with the Southwest Initiative Foundation. A local advisory board identifies needs in the community, grants dollars to local non-profits, and raises funds to grow the endowment. Earnings from the foundation's endowment are used to fund grants offered twice per year. MCF has granted over $180,000 since its founding.
All recipients of a MCF grant are required to complete a report for accountability purposes. This will be mailed out after the grants are awarded.
Donations to MCF are always welcome. Donations are tax deductible as allowed by law. Donations are accepted online via https://swifoundation.org/giving-options/donate-now/ for either Endowment, Non-Endowed Fund or Operating Fund. Please specify to Marshall Community Foundation.
