Save the Date - Customer Service Training with
Julie Fox from the Wisconsin Department of Tourism - January 24, 2019
Bringing Fun to Life in Wisconsin
Research shows that 68% of your customers may not choose to return to your business, not because of the product that they receive, but because they experience an attitude of indifference or rudeness by the owner, manager, or an employee. While marketing our state as the Midwest’s premier destination for fun, the Wisconsin Department of Tourism recognizes that in order to deliver on this brand and have visitors return to our state and your business, our customers must receive great customer service. To support this, a customer service program has been developed for businesses and communities throughout Wisconsin. While the premise of the program is rooted in service for the tourism industry, the basic customer service skills discussed apply to owners and employees in all industries. This session will provide attendees with the basic knowledge and skills to deliver outstanding customer service experiences.

Employer Childcare Survey for
Jackson County
|
|
The Jackson County Child Care Task Force was formed in late 2017 to address the growing issue of inadequate child care in our county. Employers are struggling to recruit and retain talented staff. One of the reasons for this struggle is the lack of child care providers in our community.
We recently conducted a survey asking working parents for their feedback on the child care issues they face. The results were very eye-opening. In our county, only 43.55% of parents feel their current child care arrangement fully meets their family’s needs. Many families rely on family and friends to care for their children, making it very difficult to maintain their work schedule. Many working parents have missed work due to child care issues.
We also asked what direct impact this has on the workforce. Over 68% of the respondents were unable to work overtime or have been absent from work due to child care issues. Another 56% have been late to work, and over 50% are unable to work to their full capacity due to stress and concerns about child care. The overall cost of the lost productivity of workers in Jackson County totaled over $209,000 per month or over $2.5 million a year.
The top concerns for parents are the cost and the availability of quality care. Some families are on wait lists for months. Making the issues even more difficult, centers are struggling to fill vacant staff positions.
Our task force is working hard to uncover and develop solutions to help our workforce with this issue. As an employer, we need your help. We’re asking that you complete a short survey that will help us determine the direct impact on employers in the area. We’ll then take these results, along with the results of the parent survey, and work to identify possible solutions to this crisis.
In order to provide the most accurate data, we ask each employer to gather feedback from those most knowledgeable on this topic and complete a single survey per employer. You can access the survey at
https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/HF83FNY
or at the bottom of the Black River Area Chamber of Commerce website homepage at
www.blackrivercountry.net
. The survey will be available through the month of November.
We thank you in advance for your cooperation and help with this very important workforce issue.
Sincerely,
Jackson County Child Care Task Force

Regal Presented with Exemplary Employer Award
Committed to hiring those with disabilities looking for a job
Story and photo courtesy of JoDee Brooke/Banner Journal
With more and more of today’s employers looking for more potential employees, Wisconsin Department of Workforce Development (DWD) andWisconsin Department of Vocational Rehabilitation (DVR) are making the task of finding responsible employees for those companies.
Regal Beloit’s Corporation’s (Regal) Black River Falls plant is one of those businesses working with DWD and DVR to fill its workforce.
DWD and DVR staff were in Black River Falls last week to present Regal with an Exemplary Employer Award. The award recognizes the commitment of employers in recruiting and hiring job seekers with disabilities.
“Employers who work with disabled individuals recognize their talent and value and what they bring to the workplace,” shared DVR deputy administrator Meredith Dressel.
From July 2017 through June 2018, 4,143 DVR consumers achieved successful employment. The average wage per week for that group was $345. The average wage per hour was $13.37 and the average number of hours worked was 26 per week. Of the 4,143, 1,357 received health insurance benefits from their employer.
In 2011, DWD helped fulfill 2,973 successful closures.
In 2017, DWD helped complete 4,133 successful closures.
Successful closures are those who obtained a job in competitive, integrated employment consistent with their job goal and were successfully employed in that job for a minimum of 90 days. A successful closer is someone who agrees they are no longer in need of DVR services in order to maintain long-term employment.
Regal has worked with DWD, DVR and Aptiv, an organization that provides job placement, along with therapeutic day programs and support to people with disabilities through job internships, assessments and coaching and behavioral support services to people with disabilities.
Aptiv, formerly Riverfront, is an organization committed to providing people with disabilities the opportunity to showcase their aptitude for learning new skills. It also works with individuals to better engage and play a more-active role in their community and to live a more-meaningful and fulfilling life. Aptiv counselors work with individuals to find adaptive options that help them succeed in their goals.
Aptiv clients are those individuals with learning disabilities, physical disabilities, intellectual disabilities, Down syndrome, brain injuries, visual impairment, autism, emotional disturbance and hearing impairments.
“Vocational rehabilitation is part of DWD,” said DWD assistant deputy secretary BJ Bernbach. “A lot of businesses are looking at vocational rehabilitation for employees. These same businesses are eager to get employees from DVR.”
Jeff Leek had worked 30 years in the woodworking trade prior to being hired by Regal. He lost his thumb and two middle fingers and cut his index finger in an accident. Since then, he also fell and broke two bones in his wrist.
“It has been a pleasure working with Jeff,” shared Aptiv employment specialist Scott Johnson. “He is a great example of helping to improve his life despite his disabilities.”
Jeff worked with Regal’s Jessica Risch while completing a three-month internship. It allowed Regal to see what he was capable of doing. Today, he works under the team leadership of Diane Bush.
“They, Jessica and Diane, were so good to me,” shared Jeff. Leigh (Kinyon, Regal human resources assistant) too. She helped me a lot.”
“Jeff is understated,” said Scott. “He brings to the table many positives – his dependability, the extra effort he puts forth, his positive attitude, accountability, accuracy and pride in doing a job well.”
Following a big round of congratulations, Jeff shared, “Scott’s a good person. I’ve worked at Regal since January. I haven’t missed a day yet; actually show up five minutes early every day. Thank you for giving me the opportunity to work here and to show you what I can do. I look forward to going to work every day.”

Wisconsin Department of Workforce Develpment (DWD) presented Black River Falls Regal Beloit Corporation (Regal) with its Exemplary Employer Award for demonstrating its strong commitment to recruiting and hiring job seekers with disabilities. The award was fittingly presented Oct. 25; October is Disability Employment Awareness Month. Franks named ‘Rising Star Under 40’ for the 7 Rivers Region
Story by JoDee Brooke/Banner Journal
Kristin Franks, financial advisor at Edward Jones in Black River Falls (BRF), was named one of River Valley Media Groups’ and 7 Rivers Alliance’s “Rising Stars Under 40,” a group of 20 young entrepreneurs and leaders who make a positive difference in Wisconsin, Minnesota and Iowa.
Thirty-one-year-old Franks grew up in Red Wing, MN. She learned early on the importance of community involvement, watching her parents volunteer for and give to their community. “It was just normal to be involved and serve,” shared Franks. “So their example inspired me to do the same no matter where I was in my life.”
Franks moved to BRF in 2010. Although new to the area, being her husband’s hometown, Franks soon began building relationships.
Franks is currently BRF Rotary Club president. “I am working along with our club members to get a high school interact service club started,” explained Franks. “It is so exciting to see the energy our high school students have and share in their excitement and ideas for improving our community and world through service projects. I am involved in Rotary because I believe in their mission, “Service Above Self.” I was involved in Interact as a high school student and also received a generous college scholarship from Rotary, so I had always planned to give back some day by becoming a Rotarian.”
Franks serves on the BRF Public Library Board of Trustees, sharing she has many memories of her mom taking her to the library. “She helped instill a love of reading that I still have today,” said Franks. “For me, reading is also a positive family bonding experience that I want to share with my children.”
She is serving her second term on the Chamber Board of Directors. “I serve on this board, because I know as a business owner how much the Chamber does to promote and support other businesses as well as tourism in Jackson County.”
She also volunteers her time within Edward Jones as a trainer and mentor; she volunteers in her church, singing on the worship team and volunteering in the nursery. “My faith is a very important part of my life and has shaped the person I am today and has taught me the importance of service and giving,” shared Franks.
Franks said her proudest professional accomplishment has been building relationships and earning the trust of over 400 families in Jackson County. “I am also proud that in running my practice, I have the balance that I have been striving for to serve my clients and share in their milestones in life and also have time to spend with my family.”
Nominated by Black River Area Chamber of Commerce executive director Amanda Gunn, Franks lives in Black River Falls with her husband Scott and their children Beckham and Nora and the family’s dog Dori.
Franks said she was very surprised to learn she had been nominated. “I live in a fabulous community where so many individuals give of their time and talents, so to be recognized is very humbling, and I feel very honored to be noticed for my involvement in the Black River Falls community,” she shared. “The reason why I am involved in the community is I believe we are put on this earth to serve.”
