Washington County Juneteenth

Presented by Big Brothers Big Sisters Columbia Northwest

Saturday, June 17, 2023

12:00 Noon - 6:30 PM

Jerry Willey Plaza at Orenco Station

943 NE Orenco Station Loop

Hillsboro, OR 97124

Juneteenth, officially called Juneteenth National Independence Day, is a federal holiday celebrating the emancipation of four million enslaved African Americans. Observed annually on June 19th, the celebration originated in Galveston, Texas, when Union soldiers arrived on June 19, 1865, and Galveston’s residents finally learned that slavery had been abolished. The following year, on June 19, the first official Juneteenth celebration took place in Texas. Festivities throughout the United States typically included prayer and religious services, speeches, educational events, family gatherings and picnics, and festivals with music, food, and dancing.

Black pioneers in Oregon annually celebrated Grand Emancipation Day on January 1st in Oregon as early as 1863. Clara People, a Kaiser shipyard worker, brought the Juneteenth tradition to Oregon in 1945. Building on those legacies, the Black Advisory Council, in collaboration with other community groups, will celebrate Juneteenth 2023 on Saturday, June 17th.

The Juneteenth celebration will include food, music, speakers, and Black-owned business vendors.

Public Policy and Government Relations

Councils & Task Forces

Join us in our commitment to shaping public policies, advocating for our members' interests, and making a difference in Washington County. Whether you're an industry expert or simply interested in getting involved, your contribution is highly valued and can help us create a positive impact for our community as a whole.

At the Washington County Chamber, we believe in the power of collaboration and expertise when it comes to shaping public policies and advocating for the interests of our members and the community. To ensure that our decisions align with the needs of various industries and address critical issues, we have established industry-specific councils and issue-specific task forces.

Our industry-specific councils bring together professionals and experts from different sectors within our county. These councils serve as valuable sources of knowledge and insights, providing guidance to our Public Policy Committee on major policy decisions. With their industry expertise, these council members help us gain a deeper understanding of the challenges and opportunities faced by specific sectors, enabling us to develop effective strategies that drive growth and success.

Not an expert but interested in attending; that's great too!

These meetings are held via Zoom. Registration is required to get the link to join the conversation.
