| | Mayor's Budget Message Approved | | |
After a marathon meeting with over 150 public comments, Mayor Mahan’s budget message passed in a 7-4 vote on Tuesday, March 18. The plan prioritizes public safety, unsheltered homelessness, blight reduction, and economic growth—while working to close a $46 million deficit.
The Chamber applauds the Mayor for recognizing the Chamber as a key partner in developing a sports and entertainment district, positioning San Jose as a premier destination for world-class sports, arts, and cultural events. Chamber CEO Leah Toeniskoetter and Board Chair Rob Lindo voiced strong support for these priorities, the attention to our neighborhood business districts, streamlining permitting, attracting data centers, reducing blight, and funding the interim shelter system—critical steps to fostering a vibrant and inclusive business environment.
As the budget process moves forward toward final approval in June, the Chamber will remain engaged with the Mayor, City Council, and staff to ensure strong outcomes for our business community. If you’d like to learn more about our city budget and help inform the Mayor’s decisions, the Mayor’s office will be hosting budget townhalls in the weeks ahead.
| | Office of Economic Development's Two-Year Work Plan | | |
Also on March 18, the Office of Economic Development and Cultural Affairs (OEDCA) secured City Council approval for its two-year work plan. Key priorities include job creation in manufacturing and AI, the establishment of two new business districts, and a strategic effort to revitalize downtown by attracting businesses, renewing leases, and increasing foot traffic.
The Chamber is particularly excited about the focus on growing San Jose’s sports and entertainment economy. From securing 25-year leases with the Sharks and San Jose Giants to laying the groundwork for a dedicated sports and entertainment district, this plan marks a significant investment in the city’s future.
We look forward to collaborating with OEDCA to drive economic success and ensure San Jose remains a thriving hub for business, innovation, and entertainment.
