DOE open house scheduled in Waverly for May 21
The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) has scheduled four open houses this month to provide public updates on the Portsmouth Decontamination and Decommissioning Project.
Each open house is scheduled for 2-7 p.m. to be held:
*
Tuesday, May 21
-
Pike County YMCA (400 Pride Drive, Waverly)
*
Thursday, May 23
- Christopher Conference Center (20 North Plaza Boulevard, Chillicothe)
"We are hoping to see a great regional turnout for these events," said Jeff Bettinger, the Portsmouth Gaseous Diffusion Plant's Site Lead for DOE's Portsmouth/Paducah Project Office. "The open houses provide members of the public the opportunity to have one-on-one discussions with the personnel actively involved with each project."
DOE will present information on building deactivation, demolition planning, the on-site waste disposal facility, and environmental monitoring, among other topics. Representatives from the Southern Ohio Diversification Initiative, Ohio University, the Portsmouth Site Specific Advisory Board, and site contractors will also participate.
The Portsmouth Gaseous Diffusion Plant was constructed from 1952 to 1956. Uranium enrichment operations occurred from 1954 to 2001 for national security purposes and the commercial nuclear fuel industry. The site is now in its eighth year of a decontamination and decommissioning project, with portions of the site being prepared for economic development and other uses.

Short on Workers? Consider...
The nation's opioid epidemic touches us all, including the business community. Employers have jobs to fill but hesitate to hire workers with a drug-use history. Workers recovering from addiction want to work but aren't given the chance. Other workers might be addicted but go undetected, putting workplace safety at risk.
In a survey of more than 3,200 businesses and nearly 1,500 community leaders, the Ohio Chamber of Commerce found more than half are suffering consequences of substance misuse, including absenteeism, decreased productivity and shortage of workers.
The Substance Use Recovery and Workplace Safety Program can help, and we hope you will participate.
Developed by the Ohio Bureau of Workers' Compensation and administered by your local Alcohol Drug Addiction and Mental Health Services board (ADAMHS), this pilot program for Montgomery, Ross and Scioto counties provides the following for employers that hire workers in recovery from an addiction to opioids and/or other dangerous substances
· Reimbursement for pre-employment, random and reasonable-suspicion drug testing
· Training for managers/supervisors to better manage and retain workers in recovery
· A forum for employers to share their success stories and learn from each other
We've talked to addiction experts and "second-chance" employers who told us workers in recovery are worth the investment. "When people want to recover from an addiction and you give them the tools, they will recover," said Bart Frost, HR and safety director for Taylor Lumber in Scioto County. "We have several workers in recovery, including supervisors, who are committed, loyal and do very well here."
Thank you for your consideration. Working together, we can turn this crisis around.
Wishing you every success,
Terrence B. Welsh, MD

May is Older Americans Month!
May is a pretty special time of the year at our Agency - it's Older Americans Month! It's a time to celebrate the wonderful contributions given by so many older Ohioans in our communities and express our gratitude for their years of positive influence and dedication to their families, friends and neighbors.
The 2019 theme,
Connect,
Create,
Contribute, encourages older adults and their communities to:
- Connect with friends, family, and services that support participation.
- Create by engaging in activities that promote learning, health, and personal enrichment.
- Contribute time, talent, and life experience to benefit others.
